Hi ladies,

Had my U/S & Blood test.. still waiting for the results... but the U/S lady said that I had 4 follicles on my right..and 6 on my left.. and some smaller ones...

I know that this does not necessary mean that I will have 10 eggs.

Just wondering what is the average number of eggs people get during EPU?

What is a good number of eggs? Gee, how long is a piece of string??? This depends on your individual fertility indicators, so averages are meaningless. Each mature follicle can contain zero or one eggs. I have LOR and had six mature follies and four eggs in a recent EPU. They were four good eggs but none fertilised. Another lady the same age as me (in over 40s) had 10 eggs and nine fertilised. Further, it seems from others who have been around longer than me that all cycles are different. So the number of follies you have now might not be like the number you get next time. It depends on your individual response to the stimming each time. But, I'd be happy with 10 follies, that's for sure.

I am guessing it really depends on your situation.

I have PCOS and on my last EPU in November at my cd12 ultrasound I had 7 follies, I was thinking that was pretty good. Get to EPU 7 days later and I wake up the number 17 on my hand. They retrieved 17 eggs and of that 14 fertilised.....on my cycle before 8 follies at scan, 15 retrieved, 2 fertilised.....

I dont think there is an average number because there are too many things adding up to each persons individual retrieval.

I may be heading for early menopause and my last EPU at age 33 I had ten follicles, five eggs, I think 4 fertilised but only two were good for transfer. Still ended up with a BFN.

At the end of the day what you get is what you get. It may only take one. I remember last year reading about one lady who only had one follie, got one egg and got her BFP. So you never quite know. It's a crap shoot unfortunately - try to go with the flow and not too much pressure on yourself. Best of luck!

Agree with all of the above about the numbers not necessarily giving any indication of success...but I'll add my stats in too to give you an idea.

I have LOR of 6.2 (I'm 34) and at EPU had 10 eggs, of which 7 were matured, 3 fertilised (ICSI) and one made it to transfer (morula, not blast). BFN

But my FS said based on our circumstances, he was very pleased with how it all went and how I responded to the drugs etc, so will be following a similar protocol for cycle 2.

I know it's hard, but try not to think about the "numbers" too much - it does your head in! (i know it did for me!)

LOR is low ovarian reserve.

I don't mean to sound totally negative but I learned all about expectations the hard way on my first cycle. My new view is hope for the best, but expect nothing; then everything is a bonus. No way I would hope for a few to freeze. The fall to Earth is way too far. Sounds like you need to find some strategy to support you atm because the reality is that even though there are a lucky few who it works for quickly, most people seem to try for several cycles and many still don't achieve their BFP. You are only at the start of the IVF gig - and I'm not that much further in than you - so you're going to need to reserve some stamina. Panadol is fine if you have headaches. All the best. As pilar so wisely said, what you get is what you get.

I'm 36 with low AMH. 1 had 11 follicles to begin with and 6 eggs were picked up. 3 went on to fertilize and survived for both transfer (1) and freezing (2).

It's such a fine balance between getting a good result and running the risk of OHSS. It's hard not to feel anxious though when you 'only' get 6 egg whilst others get 20 or more. There are also people who may only get a single egg too.

Our bodies can only do what they can. No more and no less.

Hi Angelic, in your position, I would be comfortable with 10 follies, I would say that is a "good number". BUT As everyone else has said it is quality over quantity and such an individual thing that varies from cycle to cycle.

My sig shows number of eggs, blasts for both my down reg cycles, which have been completely different.
