I can only tell you our experience. My Mum has it and so far 3/4 of her daughters do. There is still a possibility of the 4th getting it too as she is only 20 and I didn't get it until 21/22.

Have you and your kids been tested for coeliac disease (gastroscopy by a gastroenterologist not just a blood
Test)? Coeliac is hereditary. You need to be eating a significant amount of gluten for the tests to be accurate. If it were my chil I would be asking for a referral to a peadiatric gastroenterologist. You can find information about testing and symptoms at http://www.coeliac.org.au/ |

When a coeliac diagnosis is confirmed you can join the coeliac society, the web page is in my last post. Your specialist will write you a letter for them.
My GP then did a health care plan and referred me to a dietician. This meant the dietician fees were largely covered by Medicare. Between the coeliac society and dietician I got the hang of things pretty quickly. It's really important your kids are eating lots of gluten - the recommended amount for adults is the equivalent of 6 slices of bread daily (ie 6 serves - so that might be two bread slices, bowl of weetbix, pasta at dinner, muesli bar with oats and one more serve). Not sure on the recommendation for kids - I'd ring the Coeliac Society and explain you're going through the testing and see if they can help. I saw my Gastro once for an initial appt, once more pre the gastroscopy (I think), in recovery after the gastroscopy, then once about a week or two after the gastroscopy to discuss the results. Was pretty simple really - although I was a private patient, and an adult. Some of the other members might add more info about the process their kids went through as it might be slightly different. |
