Placenta low

hi, I just have the nuchal scan. After the scanning, the doctor said my placenta is low. What will it affect? thanks so much. This post has been edited by nott: 13/04/2012, 09:24 AM

Maybe you would be comfortable with a female operator? Maybe you can find another scanning place. I have had trans vaginal scans a few times without any issues. When you are in labour you won't care who is looking at your whatsit! I had a low placenta and it moved up out of the way. If it stayed low then I may have had a caesarian recommended as they can bleed.

a good ultrasound place will let you insert the probe yourself. They should be making it as easy as possible for you. As for being in labour, nobody looked at or touched my vulva/vagina (it's not a rude word) when I was in labour. It's not compulsory.

They failed, not you. There is no need to have internal examinations in labour either, so please don't worry.

Lots of people have low lying placentas..it just depends on if its covering the cervix or not. They can move up out o the way as well..so dont stress yet. When you get further along u will have another u/s and they will check again.. It its covering the cervix you will need a c/s

I just had the same issue. It was 1.9cm from cervix at 20w which is inside the margin for fairly automatic Caesarian. By this week 32.5w it he placenta is now clear of my cervix at 2.96cm. My OB has a 2cm cut off. Hope that helps. As for problems, I think the main issue during pg is bleeding. But as far As I know during labour it can be dangerous to have a vaginal birth as if the placenta comes out first it's danger to both mum & baby. I just took the advice of my midwife and OB and trusted their judgement. It all depends on the distance from your cervix really.

I wouldn't stress too much at this stage as the placenta can move. They will do another scan at 20 and then 35 weeks to make sure it has moved. My OB said it needs to be at least 3cm away. My placenta at the 12 week scan was only 1.5cm away from the cervix. By 35 weeks it was 7cm so no need for a caesar. Good luck.
