Had to laugh at a PP using it to get from Melbourne to Sydney. DH turned ours on to drive from Gold Coast to Sydney. I laughed at him because it's a simple case of get on the highway, drive straight ahead for 850 km and you're there. No directions needed for that biggrin.gif

NO I was saying it was not used for directions but timing so I knew when/where to stop when the kids were getting cranky (ie. the next stopping place being 30 mins or 1.5hrs away). It is very easy to drive from my place to my folks (Melb-Syd)..... soon we will only have 4 sets of traffic lights between us in Melb and getting off the Harbour Bridge at North Sydney (and as I grew up in Syd and my folks have lived in the same house for 35yrs I know how to get there even with my eyes closed wink.gif ).

I've recently got a GPS (Navman) and I am finding it so hard to use!! Its terminology is so whack. Like if you are supposed to stay on a road every time you go past an intersection it will say "Exit 'roadyourareon'." Now to me that means get off it, not stay on it!! rant.gif Obviously if its somewhere I know I ignore but if you are using it it generally means you don't know where you are going!? I have now taken to using it without the voice and just following the arrow on the picture. wacko.gif

I've just replaced my old Navman with a new Navman, and neither of them have done this? They just tell me to "continue straight", or "keep right" if there is another road that veers off to the left.

It has made me laugh recently though when it told me to "perform a U-turn when possible" while I was on a motorway biggrin.gif Ipswich Motorway though - massive changes have been made out there and the GPS signal was getting lost wink.gif

Living as expat again!
Before GPS existed; we relied on our street directory, when whereis existed we used to print the itinerary how to get to places, and now and as per OP: GPS all the way!

Of course I can read street directory cool.gif we use googlemaps a lot whenever we travel O/S.

I use neither. I use google maps, write out instructions at home and if I get lost just keep driving until I find a street/suburb I recognise. DP jokes that all roads lead to Ryde because I can get just about anywhere from Ryde.

Not the most practical of methods, but it works for me. I get too stressed trying to fiddle with directories.

I agree Ferdinand. Sooner or later you may end up in Ryde or close enough.

Its amazing the amount of people I talk to that are shocked I dont have a GPS.

I must ask a question, do you find it distracting when you are driving?

I haven't user a street directory in years. Yes i use the gps in the car.

Yes of course I can read a street directory/map. I am not pathetic

Me too. Paper is back up for me now - I can do it, but why bother if I don't have to?

ETA - I find it no more distracting than a human navigator (maybe less so in some cases ph34r.gif ) and no worse than having music on.

Yeah, I need to figure it out - its so weird. Can you tell me which voice you have yours set to? It also kept saying "U turn" when it wanted us to exit (not even to exit then double back, just a regular exit) once which made us freak out that we were going in the wrong direction. nno.gif

What I loved though was being able to type in "Cafe" or "Museum" when we were visiting Canberra and being told the closest one.

I have both. The GPS gets more use but I like having the Street Directory (and Road Atlas) in the car as a back-up.
