My two and a half year old will not sleep with a blanket or any covering. This is fine in warm weather, but not so great when it gets cold. I put him in a padded sleepsuit (the warmest I could find) and have him in a spencer under that, however his room gets REALLY cold at night, and the last three nights he has come in to snuggle with me during the night.

If I try and put any kind of covering on him he throws a tanty and last night he actually walked out of his room to me with the blanket and threw it at my feet saying 'no sheet'.

I also go in after he is asleep and put one on him but he also will kick it off or wake up and throw a tanty. I had a heater in his room last year which helped but that means a $1,000 electricity bill for the quarter and we now have a bigger mortgage to pay after moving end last year so obviously don't want to do this again.

Any suggestions or tips?

Have you seen those sleepsuits made from fleece material and they have feet on them too. The colours can be pretty bright, but they might be warm enough. I have the same problem with my four year old! Even in his sleep he'll start kicking angrily as soon as I cover him with a blanket...

have you tried not putting a blanket on him? Does he actually get cold/wake up cold or are you just assuming he will?

Maybe something like this for him to snuggle?

We have the same problem, absolute tantrums if we try to put a sheet/blanket/doona on DS.

We have sleeping bags for summer and winter though, and a mid weight one for the so-so cool nights.

I find that if I put him in warm PJ's and part of the nighttime routine is putting him into the sleeping bag (like the gro bags) then we dont have any problems. I got my mum to make bigger ones for him in the different weights as the commercially made ones weren't big enough.

I am hoping he will grow out of the "no blanket" thing at some point!

I made the mistake of telling DD one cold night that a blanket was her special blanket in the hopes I could get it on her. Now I can't get the damn thing off her!

What about pj's under the sleep suit or maybe a sleeping bag? Does he have a favourite character/cartoon so you can take him shopping and get a quilt or blanket with the character on it?

Yes I put him in a lined sleepsuit, which has cotton on the inside and fleece on the outside with feet. Babykids brand - they are the warmest I can find.

My DD now 6 uses all in ones with feet. We are in canberra and she doesn't like blankets either. The warmest best quality ones are the SNUGTIME brand. They are exxy but worth it, my daughter wears this plus a skivvy and socks in winter and doesnt wake up cold. Her room is also the coldest in the house. Try Ebay for second hand ones

I have had this issue with both kids. DD is now old enough to get under the covers when she gets cold in the night, but I used to dress her in one of those lined, fleecy jumpsuits, and if it was really cold, a spencer and leggings underneath as well. We fell into the same trap of using a heater in her room and had an enormous electricity bill too, so we don't do that any more.

But now that she is older she is able to tell us that she doesn't want the covers- I think she is a bit of a hot frog and just doesn't need the same level of warmth that I do. So to a certain extent I wouldn't worry if they don't want a blanket, maybe they don't need it.

I saw some really thick ones in Myer like the thickness of a light quilt/comforter they would be really warm.
