Wicked campervans

I know they are aimed at backpackers but wonder if anyone has any feed back on them and if I am crazy for considering throwing DD in one and going somewhere for a week. No idea where to go or where to explore. We usually goto the gold coast around now and again in July but im not in a financial position to do that this year. Do you need powered sites? Or are they fine anywhere? Any ideas on where to go? We would be leaving from Melbourne. Hints, tips, dos, donts for roadtripping???

I don't know much about them but our Canadian friends used one to trip around Australia for 4 months when their DD was 6mths old and didn't seem to have any probs with it.

Don't do it, we hired one for a week and were hassled anytime we parked near a beach (clearly must have been intending to camp even if we were just stopping for dinner). You will need to stay in paid accommodation (caravan parks etc) so the savings of a cheap van are often negated by this expense. I would rather travel in my car and pay a little extra to stay in cabins at caravan parks. There are far nicer campers available if you need to travel that way.

I have heard very very bad things about them but I know they have been made to clean up their act by consumer affairs or some similar body. Google them and you will find out more info, particularly on backpacker forums. Personally I wouldnt get one but they may have improved a lot.

I don't know anything about them (besides the bad things I have heard), but they look like death traps.

Do it. We have a caravan and love to get out and about camp by the beach and in many other wonderful spots. We rarely stay in caravan parks as we are fully self contained. There is a book that lists all the free camping or minimal cost camping for the whole of Australia. We love it. http://www.campsaustraliawide.com/

My father owned a workshop on the North coast of NSW. Apparently, they were constantly being towed in - their maintenance wasn't all that great.
