I come from a household where food residue was removed from dishes before placing them in the dishwasher, and dishes were rinsed of detergent residue with clean water after hand-washing.

The rationale being that it helps minimise dishwasher maintenance/cleaning and chemical consumption/contamination.

My other half's family did neither, but now that we do so in our home, others that don't take both of us aback somewhat.

I rinse my dishes before they go into the dishwasher. It means less cleaning is required in the filter and it's less likely to have the motor burn out.

I also rinse handwashed dishes with clean water to wash of any detergent residue.

I don't own a dishwasher but I rinse my handwashed dishes after washing to remove detergent residue and any food bits that might be on from the water. And I air dry, not wipe with a manky tea towel(gross).
I don't drink detergent so why would I leave traces of it on my dishes?

When i had a dishwasher i rinsed before i put them in. Apparently help the life of the filter.

Handwashing i rinse straight away. That way if i don't do dishes after dinner i don't get crusty dried on stuff the next morning.
Never considerd rinsing them after washing though

Same as the OP. Plates are scraped and rinsed before going into the dishwasher, and hand-washed things are rinsed with clean water after washing.

My late grandma didn't rinse after washing up and my mum was convinced that she could taste the detergent.

Always rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Saves a lot of filter cleaning and avoids many of the smears / baked on spots still being there when the dish washing is finished.

I have only ever handwashed and will ALWAYS rinse dishes before actually filling up the sink to wash them and always rinse off the soap suds after washing. I am so particular about how I do the dishes and just a few nights ago I had the sink full and someone came in and put in about 5 plates and cutlery. I nearly cried because they hadn't been rinsed and were going to make my water dirty. (pregnancy hormones for ya)
