Hi.

My husband and I have been trying for 14 months now. We are exhausted, frustrated and sad. We have a daughter who is nearly 3 and all our tests have come back fairly normal.

We recently watched the 60 show where a couple from Tumut went to the US to have IVF performedand have a girl. This is, for ethical reasons, illegal in Australia. My husband and I are looking to go down the IVF path as our secondary infertility remains unexplained and are considering going to the US to try to have a girl via IVF.

I am well aware of all the ethical issues that this poses, and I am hoping that someone reading this has had similar thoughts to us, or has had any experience with this.

I would really like to have any information that anyone has about this as it seems to be quite a process. Thanks.

I've got no advice for you, but to be honest, I hope you have a thick skin as gender selection threads tend to get ugly really quick. Good luck - I hope you get the answers you need. original.gif

I presume there is a reason for gender selection, as in a genetic problem that is only passed to one sex? If that is the case that is allowed in Australia....

Why?

As the PP said, is there a potential genetic problem that could affect a baby boy?

As PPs have said you CAN have gender selection in Australia if it is to screen for a genetic disorder that only effects one gender.

You will need a giant bank account if you want to pursue IVF in the US.....

Personally I have to travel to the other end of the state to undertake my IVF treatment - having done that for the last 3 years and having the Medicare safety net at my disposal has been hard enough.

I cannot imagine how difficult attempting to do the whole thing in a foreign country (especially one as far away and with such insane medical costs as the USA) would be.

Have you been trying for 14mths because you have been avoiding certain days to conceive a girl?

If so, just have sex every second day & you are more than likely to fall pregnant... with a baby.

If you only want a girl, then IVF is NOT for you.

nno.gif And what's the idea of posting this in 12mths+. Most people here wouldn't care if they had a boy or a girl.

Unbelievable. rolleyes.gif

I'm sorry but if you have been trying for that long (which isn't really THAT long in the overall grand scheme of things) then I would have thought you would be happy with any sex baby?

I know my DH and I (who are going on for 4yrs ttc#2) don't care if it was a boy, girl, blue, red or green baby IFYKWIM - we just want a baby.

If there is a medical reason why you only want a girl then fair enough and you can do that in Australia...but otherwise your post really is quite offensive and sad.

Maybe it would be better off in the gender selection threads than this one where the majority of people have been through alot in trying for a bub.

Don't belong on this particular board, saw this in recent topics.

I think you'd be absolutely crazy to even entertain the thought. It just doesn't matter.

I've got no problem with gender swaying in terms of timing a bit for a particular gender, we are timing for a boy this time around, however I also believe anyone who does that has to take it with a grain of salt and realise it just DOESN'T MATTER. I'll be perfectly happy if I end up with three girls.

I think IVF should be left for the people who really need - those who want a baby, not those who decided they wanted a certain sex.

Why do you want a girl? Is is so that she will be pink, frilly, wearing fairy wings and a tutu? What if she turns out to be a tomboy and prefers playing in the dirt with trucks, playing football and refuses to wear skirts and dresses? What then? Will you reject her and try to have another girl?

My husband and I tried to conceive for 24 months before turning to IVF and conceiving our child. We didn't care whether we had a girl or boy, as long as we had a baby of our own. It will be the same for our next baby. As long as we can have a baby we won't care what gender it is.

Gender selection for nonmedical reasons is illegal in Australia and I hope it stays that way permanently.

But hey, if you are happy to spend $50 000 going to America for IVF and gender selection then go ahead. It's your money. Just make sure that you tell your current and future daughters that their potential brothers were destroyed because they weren't what you wanted.

I disagree with gender selection for no good reason. Why do you only want a girl? You have a girl already. I'm confused, and its your second child as well. Keep trying, and accept what you are given. The couple on 60 mins although I don't agree did gender selection when they had 6 boys already! They had tried so hard to have a girl, and this was there last resort. You would really go to these lengths with your second child and you already have a girl already!!
