DD is 10 1/2 months and I've been FF for a couple weeks, she's taken to it well but i have a few questions for people who know what they are doing.

I have read that after a feed you need to throw away the left over milk....

can it be saved at all for 1/2 an hour or an hour? or more?? if left out of the fridge? (its not hot here anymore)

Also can a made up bottle of formula be stored in the fridge then warmed up and used?

i seem to be throwing a lot away which is fine if i have to be but if i can keep it for at least a little while that would be handy.

I read somewhere it can't be kept made up at all so i was stressing and didn't want to give her bad milk Tounge1.gif

My doctor told me that you can keep the bottle out of the fridge for 1hr (providing it isn't a hot day) and it is still ok to feed it to them and if you have it made up in the fridge, it can be kept for 24hours. Once you've made up the formula, you can only heat the milk once.

We normally boil the water and fill all the bottles and store them in the fridge. Then when we are ready to feed, we heat the water so it is not really cold and then add the formula.

We sterilise all the bottles in the morning, fill with boiling water then allow them to cool and keep on the bench at room temperature. We then add the formula just prior to feeding. Using this method, the formula can then be kept out of the fridge for 1 hour.

If you prefer to make the formula up in advance, you can keep it in the fridge for 24 hours, but can only heat it up once, then keep out of the fridge for 1 hour.

It's not recommended to put formula that they have started drinking back in the fridge for any period of time in case of bacteria.

“Truths and roses have thorns about them.”
You can keep it made up in the fridge for up to 24 hours and 1hour out of the fridge.

We made the bottles with water and left them on the bench (then it takes far less time to warm them). I pre-measured formula into those containers for the late night feeds so I didn't have to think too hard. LOL. But otherwise made them up as I went.

But OP, I always found it best to trust my instincts. At first it seems terrifying but then you realise, it's just as if you were drinking milk. You know yourself you probably wouldn't touch a glass of milk that had been out an hour on a stinking hot day but on a cool day it probably wouldn't bother you.

And when I was too tired to hear my own instinct... I just threw it out. Sometimes not having another stressor is worth the cost of a little wasted milk.

I am really slack, no sterilising ever or boiled water after 6mo.

Read the side of the formula tin and it will tell you what to do

BUT, I have always recycled the unfinished formula once, we also don't heat the bottle the first time and reheat in the microwave the second time around ph34r.gif and if it is not drank it gets tipped. I never leave a bottle out for more than the time it takes to drink, so always less than half and hour and never had any problems.

I make up all the formula scoops without the water in the bottles and leave them on the bench and then use a spare bottle I fill the right amoutn of tap water.

Whoo Whoo, I am on my last tin of formula... Sorry just had to say.

At that age the other thing you could consider is giving the milk via a cup rather than a bottle, cup skills can often be pretty good at this age. It will be easier in the long run.
All the best.
