I'm currently pregnant with twins and I'm keen to bf as I did with my other two. Just wondering how other twins mums went whether you tandem feed them or separately? My main concern is I have huge boobs so I was also concerned with my other 2 I was going to suffocate the baby but at the same time I don't want one baby on my boob all day I would like to feed them at the same time am I being unrealistic?

I am a twin and mum tandem feed us. If one of us woke for a feed during the night, mum would wake the other one and feed us both at the same time. We were bf for 18 months. Like you mum had two older children so it was easier for her to feed my brother and I at the same time.

Hi OP
I breasfed my boys almost exclusively tandem feeding, for the same reason as you - I didn't want to spend my entire day feeding. I tandem fed until they were about 5-6 months, then fed separately as we were all more mobile and they were much quicker at feeding. So its totally doable. I used a special tandem feeding pillow - I think it was called my breast friend or something - which meant it was impossible for my breasts to squash my boys - they lay side on to each breast. Good luck! |

Not a mother of twins but I remember when my Aunt had twins she said it was easy enough to feed them once they were latched but she struggled to lhold both and get them to latch when they were tiny. I remember holding one for her while she got one started and then passing him to her so she could feed both at once. After they were older and more adept and she was more experienced she could manage fine and went on to tandem feed (feeding two or more children at the same time) them no worries until well beyond the first year.
I know the Australian breastfeeding association as a lot of information on breastfeeding twins and on tandem feeding that might be of help. |

Hi OP, pop into the multiples forum. There's plenty of us in there who have. I tandem fed for 13 mo, there was rarely an occasion during that time when I only fed one at a time. It can be tricky when they are newborns, but once they have head control it's much easier.

I also tandem bf twins.
When they were little up until 6 months I used the mybrestfriend twin pillow and it was fantastic! I would highly recommend it as it made things so much easier. I had one good feeder who finished early and one very slow sucker who I struggled to feed in under 40minutes and my quick feeder would sleep on the pillow while his twin continued to feed. Once they were 6/7months old I could feed seperately as they were much quicker, but I still tandem fed mostly at home. I am still bf and the boys are now 17months and I still tandem feed morning and evening. Good luck! Twins are very special |

Tandem feeding is the way to go, especially when they are little and feed more often. Use a pillow or a few to prop them up in a position that is comfortable for you all this makes it a lot easier and gives you a free hand or two if you need. When my boys got bigger I was able to ditch the pillows and would have one in a regular hold the other in a football hold with his head resting on his brother. I'm still feeding them 19 months on.
If you can feed one baby you can feed two. |
