Imagine there's a topic you really want to discuss on EB, because it's interesting to you or whatever. You do a quick search to see if it's been recently discussed because you know, you don't want to be too annoying. You see that there is a similar topic in the past few months, or even weeks, and even more similar topics earlier than that. You read them, but it doesn't scratch that itch. You want to contribute to the subject, and you want to hear new opinions (because in a few weeks or months, who knows how many new members have joined EB, right? Or missed this thread at the time?)

So, which unspoken rule of EB would you break - resurrect an old thread (weeks or months old - or even years!), or start a new thread on a subject that has been done many times already?

Which annoys you more? Or don't you care? I've noticed lots of comments along the lines of "Why did you resurrect this old thread?" and "This topic has been done to death" so I figure some people must care! Do you bother checking if there are any old threads on the same subject?

FTR, I don't have a specific topic in mind, I'm just curious about which choice annoys people more/less.

To me, the worst thing you can do on EB is sound petty or irrational. I don't care if topics have "been done to death". They are usually the more entertaining topics.

More carrot sticks please
I vote that you should start a new thread. A lesser crime than resurrecting an old thread, me thinks.

Let's face it-- EB has been around for a long time. If members no longer started up topics which had been done before, the place would quickly become very very quiet! So personally, I really don't care. Even if a topic has been done to death, often reading the bickering between members can be my entertainment highlight of the day (which is unfortunately, a sad reflection on the amount I get out at the moment! biggrin.gif )

Resurrecting old threads is a huge annoyance to me. If it's just yet another thread started on the same topic, it's mildly annoying, but I'll just not reply.

It's pretty silly to expect that topics won't be done to death though... nobody would have anything new to post if you were only allowed to post about original topics.

24 hours is never enough.......
They're not old threads to everyone.

It's like the old adage:

"That's an old story."
"Not until you've heard it."

I don't mind old themes coming up by any means but start a new thread! Don't drag up a four year old thread and start an argument with a poster that posted it four years ago.

Of course new members arrive and want to discuss age old issues. No problem there at all.

Unspoken rules? I barely pay attention to the spoken ones!

I think a new thread is in order if it's months or years old.

Other unspoken rules:
The only thing that really bothers me is the lack of comprehension which can't really be avoided, seeing as though the majority of people appear to border on stupid. Not reading through a thread and then adding something that's almost irrelevant as you seem to have overlooked a good portion of the discussion, largely shows how daft people can be. Mostly it happens when people insist on a point that's already been considered irrelevant to the OP.

Other minor irritants include:

1. The people who add extra information to the OP as if it's in any way irrelevant. Quite often it's not and only serves to confuse the crowds. I've had stuff attributed to me that I've never even said because of this type of carry on.

2. Quoting an entire pp. Giant walls of text get annoying.

I don't care. I do find it a little odd and often wonder 'why?' when a very old thread has been resurrected. As for unspoken EB rules- what are they?
