Hi all,

I have my booking in appt at RPA birth centre next Friday, and I was just wondering what actually happens at this appointment? I don't have my yellow card yet, should this matter?

Thanks in advance

I had my kids at another hospital but I don't remember when I got the card.

Don't you have to be a certain way along before you can book in, I'd say you'll get the card at the appt, else tell them you don't have it yet and you need one.

ring your hospital and ask? you will most likely have to bring any blood test results, gp referral etc with you?

Not the same hospital but when I booked in to have my kids, it was just paperwork and questions. There was no medical stuff, but you did go through allergies, complications etc.

I doubt you will need blood tests. They are for the Dr / Midwives not the hospital admin staff.

I already had my yellow card by the time I had my booking in appt at RPA. I had mine given to me both times along with an info pack from my GP when I had my pregnancies confirmed. I did/ am doing shared care with my GP. Give RPA a phone check.

As for the actual appt, the midwife goes through your general health, any allergies, illnesses, operations etc, your sexual health ( last pap smear, any STD's, past antenatal and postnatal history, previous births, previous m/c and abortions, breastfeeding history, domestic violence screening, what support you'll be having post birth ( who'll be at home with you, family network etc). As RPA is a teaching hospital, there are usually studies going on, you may be asked if you are willing to participate on the study, but there is no pressure on you to do so.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

You also need to take your Private Health Insurance info, (if you have PHI of course).

What's a yellow card?

It's the record of your pregnancy that you get given if you choose RPA or Canterbury hospital to have your baby at.
You might get something else if you go to other hospitals.
