I am 15 weeks and have not started stuff at hospital, only just been referred. So just wondering when. I am going for an ultrasound on Thurs so I possibly wont go for the next one til I am 20 weeks. Do they normally find out at 18 weeks or?

You can ask this week but being that its your first they may or may not tell you till 18-20 weeks till they can be sure. I found out with my 3rd at 12 weeks but it was a very skilled sonographer who told me because she knew that it was my 3rd and I was not likely to go out and buy everything in a certain colour. She also said she could be wrong that it was simply an educated guess. She was right though original.gif

with my first i found out he was most likely a boy at 14 weeks and that was on a poor quality machine that only used to look/see the heart beat. Doctor was right. so if you are 15 weeks and it is a proper scan then they will most likely be able to tell.

We found out at 15 weeks at our OB office scan and it was confirmed at our 20 weeks at a specialist scan centre.

It depends on equipment quality and sonographer experience.
Y should be able to find out at the morphology scan (18-20week) if baby cooperates! Mine didn't!

Chance of the ultrasonographer being right at 12 weeks -50% (ha ha!)

Chance of the ultrasonographer being right at 20 weeks - about 98%.

In between 12 and 20 weeks it increases incrementally. It's about 95% accurate from about 18 weeks.

Anyone who says "I was told at 12 weeks and they got it right- well when the odds are 50/50, they have to get it right half the time!" I wouldn't trust a 'guess' at 12 weeks any more than anyone off the street, no matter how 'good' the ultrasonographer!

they generally say you find that out at your 20 week scan. They don't even ask if you want to know at the earlier ones
