Hi there, my 21 mo dd has been interested in sitting on the toilet and will tell me when she has pooed her nappy for a couple of months now, and always has a good gawk whenever I go to the toilet. So, I decided maybe it's time to start tt her.
I put her in knickers all day for 2 days (except for sleeps) and would put her on the toilet a heap of times during the day and she would sit there for a little while, then hop off without doing anything (she managed to do a little fart once I have just put her in a nappy today but do you think I should keep trying or leave her for a month or so and try again? |

I would either try a day of no pants or just wait a month & try again. My DD was like this at about 21mths, but at around 23 mths she started taking off her nappy & going to the potty herself. I left her with no pants for a few days, & that was it. Do u have a potty? My DD uses both but isn't able to manage the toilet on her own.

In my experience, when they are ready they wil take themselves off to the potty or toilet without you having to do much. You can "train" them by putting them on the toilet a million times a day and stressing about messes till the cows come home but until THEY want to do it, it is just a whole lot of work on your part for little gain.
As log as they know what the potty/toilet is for and you talk about it, it will happen in good time. I have ahd 3 TT themselves, one at 22mths and 2 at 2.5yrs. Little mess, no fights or effort on my part. |

We are just about to start this journey ourselves with DD - 22 months. Same as you, she tells me once she has gone and takes her nappy off. Today I gave her the potty and a doll with a potty. I couldn't get the doll to work really and she was more interested in feeding the doll the water, but she happily sat on the potty for ages - though didn't actually do anything. I haven't been able to get her to go sit up on the big toilet at all, so this is progress for us. I am hoping she will willingly go sit there next time I notice she is about to poo (usually a quite obvious event) and plan to give it a try for wees for part of each day. We are often out in the mornings but will give it the full attempt over the Easter long weekend as we don't have anything on most of that time. I am going to try no pants at all (leg warmers if she needs them, but in Qld, so not as cold here yet) and see if we can kind of time one or 2, with the hope she will then get the idea.
I also acknowledge that at the age of our kids, they are on the young side for getting the idea, so am going to give it those 4 days, and then let it go if I don't think we are getting anywhere. My sister TT'd herself at the same age so I know it is possible to get it, but she had older siblings to "copy" and a "baby" that she didn't want to be as Mum had a newborn. |
