Hi,
I have had a horribly sore throat since Tuesday night and I'm now beside myself. I'm normally pretty stoic but when I woke this morning, after a restless night I sat up and burst into tears. I have had glandular fever in the past so whenever I get sick my glands come up. The ones in my neck now feel the size of golf balls which is just adding to the pain. I have taken panadol and gargled Asprin but nothing seems to be helping. I'm eating lemon/honey Strepsils like they are lollies but the pain in swallowing is becoming unbearable. DH has just arrived home and told me to go to bed. Firstly I can't do that as he has gone upstairs for a 1hr work phone call and we have 3 children and secondly I'm dreading going to sleep as the feeling of waking with the sore throat is horrible. When we lived in Sydney I could buy a throat spray which numbed the area but that isn't available where we are now. I have had a look inside my mouth and it is very red around the pharyngeal arches but no sign of muck on my tonsils so I"m ruling out tonsilitis. I'm sorry to be a big whinger but it's the end of a long day, I still need to feed, bath and bed my 3 daughters and I'm over having such a sore throat. I can't talk, swallow or eat. Does anyone know of anything that can alleviate it? Thanks I would really appreciate any help. |

If your throat is so sore that you can't swallow - get to a doctor. You more than likely have a throat infection that need anti biotics. Get to a doctor ASAP.
But in the meantime try a salt water gargle. Jo |

You poor thing. It sounds awful and I agree, having a sore throat makes you feel dreadful.
I find weak, black tea helps at the time, but it doesn't do much long term. Salt gargles are often useful. Hope you feel better soon. |

Sorry to hear about your sore throat, they are awful.
I know you've gargled aspirin, but I find it's more effective if I actually drink the aspirin. Hope you feel better soon. |

Hey there. Sorry you're feeling so awful, sore throats suck, especially those that linger for days.
I know you're in Singapore, and I don't know if it's available there, but we always reach for the Betadine sore throat gargle at the first sign of a sore throat. But I agree with the PP, you should probably see a doctor as soon as you can. Hope you find relief soon! |

Do you have any sage growing? If so pick a few leaves and steep in some hot water. Or pineapple juice. They are both quite soothing and have some antibacterial qualities.
Then go to the dr tomorrow! |

I find a black tea with lots of lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey is soothing. Unfortunately it doesn't make it go away. I also usually gargle with mouthwash or salt water... in the vain hope that it will do something.
I'd also take a panadol or similar. |

My first thought reading the op is tonsillitis. I would head to the doctors and get check out. I have just had 2 penicillin injections and I'm still on antibiotics due to tonsillitis. Nothing touch the sides of the pain, I was alternating panadol and nurophen every 3 hours.

Cepacaine oral solution is used at the Eye & Ear Hospital (includes nose and throat) and available over-the-counter - highly recommended.

I agree with PP's who suggest seeing a doctor as soon as you can. Tonsilitis can make you quite ill if you don't seek treatment.
For minor sore throats, as strange as it sounds, I have found that drinking coke does wonders (I don't normally drink it). I don't know why, but it works for me. |
