Well my 13 week old ds has had ongoing issues with constant diarrhea and the paed has tried him on Karicare delact, elecare and now onto neocate.
Ds has been getting dehydrated quite quickly and losing weight because he really doesn't like the elecare or neocate. It makes him vomit and choke. He liked the delact formula and put on weight but the paed thinks he has a cmp allergy so obviously we can't continue with that.
So what I was thinking maybe I could start him on rice cereal mixed with the neocate to help him put on a bit more weight and get more formula into him.
Or does anyone have any other ideas to get this little man to put on Some weight? ( he is on the flavoured neocate and it doesn't seem to make a difference)

I should also add the diarrhea has Been ongoing since 7 weeks and happens up to 10-12 times a day. He has had all bacterial infections ruled out and will have more invasive testing done if neocate doesn't do the trick.

What does the paed say about the early solids?
I know it must be such a frustrating time, but I don't think I'd do it. Certainly not without medical advise to do so.

Hopefully someone with specific Neocate advice replies as I never used it.

Absolutely no way would I give a 13 week old solid food without medical advice to do so, and even then I'd be reluctant.

I wouldn't without advice from a specialist. Also their guts are not ready before 4-6months so it could make things worse.

Considering he is already having issues with his gut, I wouldn't want to introduce solids and further exacerbate the problem.

Have you asked the paed for advice on solids?

I didn't ask specifically about solids but she said do what i need to do to get neocate into him. Starting solids was suggested by a friend. Its so hard to know what to do sad.gif I don't want him to be upset and hungry all of the time but we need a good week trial of neocate to see if it makes a difference to the diarrhea.

This. I really do understand the worry and helplessness you must be feeling watching your poor little guy suffer. Still, he is so young and his body is not at the solids stage yet. Also, think in terms of nutrition and calorie content of the prescribed formula versus the possible nutrition and calorie content of a food like rice cereal, especially in the small amounts of the cereal a child his age would even be able to consume and I think you'd see that the formulas are much more nutrient dense and have more to offer him in that sense. Please do discuss this with an experienced and reputable specialist before offering him solids at his age.

I'm sorry that your little boy is going through this, and I really hope he gets a break soon!

edited: Sorry I just saw your last post. I still think the fullness in his tummy from the rice cereal may affect the amount of formula he is able to consume so am still reluctant to say that adding rice cereal to a bottle is something I would try. I do acknowledge that I'm not in your position though. Has your Dr mentioned any anti-vomiting medication that may be able to assist with that? I'm not even sure there is anything like that for a child his age, but just in case?

No way would I be giving a child who is already having digestive issues solids at 13 weeks unless a doctor told me to do it. Even then I would be reluctant.

If you really want to make the formula thicker, try a thickener, it might be enough to get him to drink it.
