My husband has a possible opportunity....which means we may move to Sydney.

Now we all know Sydney is hugely expenisve and rents are sky high....

Has anyone experience Sydney and living 15-30mins out and enjoyed it....

My husband has a boat and we live 1min from a marina here in Auckland and life it pretty easy here with close to kids schools and ferry access to the city...still live a fair way out from the city here...and Aucklands not cheap either...

can anyone share their experience of Sydney.

We have a 9yr old girl who will need to go to a good school and a 6yr old boy.

We spent 4yrs in Queensland a few years ago and often travel there they both love Australia...my boy was born there and considers himselft and Australian.

If anybody has any comments id love to hear them.

Well 15 to 30 mins out is kind of close to the city by Sydney standards. You might get some more useful responses if you know approx whereabouts you would be living or your budget for housing as different parts of Sydney would be a vastly different experience original.gif

And if you want to be close to the boat you will need a good paying job. (And that is just to have the boat at a marina...don't want to think about paying for somewhere the family can live...unless the boat is big enough!!!!)

Not sure...prob can afford 900pw...or something like this...prob no more tho.
Looked at Lane cove....around this area looks good, but my husband wants to fish and take boat out but i think you need to be a millionaire to live in sydney and partake in this activity...just trying to think are we being unrealistic thinking we can afford this??

It would depend on what sort of commute your hubby wants to make. If you have a look at the more northern and southern suburbs, you will find areas on the rivers where you could moor a boat, and would be cheaper to live, with better schools and lifestyle. (have a look on the nepean river around pittwater etc)
This would be a bit of a commute for hubby though, but the rivers here would be better for fishing. I am sure there would be people who live in these areas who could give you some more ideas about the housing/mooring costs.

Hi
Thanks for your replies so far... we dont need to moor a boat...its just a 16ft, so just need a car park or something off the street to park the boat....

Areas to fish are of interest to DH as he think Australian fishing is no where as good as fishing here as hes foreva bringing home snapper - infact thats about all he brings home...but yeah somewhere with good schools, 20-30min by bus, train or boat for DH to commute and not spend a fortune on rent and get a reasonable hse with a pool...
I have a friend in Dromoyne...is this suburb worth considering?

It all depends on what you mean by "fortune". wink.gif

I can't think of anywhere in Sydney that meets that description and isn't going to cost you a fortune in rent. But maybe we have different ideas about what that means. biggrin.gif

ETA just saw that you are willing to pay $900 a week rent. LOL that is a fortune to me.

I love my girls
I would have thought that close to CBD and with a pool wouldn't be possible with $900/wk but I looked on realestate.com.au and found a couple of interesting ones.
Have a look at this one - looks like a gorgeous house. Not sure you'd be able to park a boat and might be a little small inside but it has the location you want.

Russel Lea is another area close to Drummoyne and I found this one. Not the most attactive house but pretty good location, has pool and could look better if spruced up with your own things

Lane Cove and surrounds is lovely but I think you'll have to forgo the pool to get into these areas.

Have a little play around with domain.com.au or realestate.com.au and see what you can see.

Good luck!

How about Georges River area or the Shire? Would be more like 30-40 min train travel depending on where you live.

But a lot cheaper with still good schools.

Can't comment on the quality of the fishing but I know I have seen boats fishing out there!

Drummoyne is beautiful. Close to the city, wonderful schools, restaurants, parks etc many other terrific suburbs in this general area also. PM me if you have any questions!
