My son (19 months) recently started going nappy free at home and, after a few accidents over the first couple of days, has been pretty reliable (either I remind him to go or he tells me when he needs the potty). I've started taking him on short trips to the shops or library in just undies, but I'm a little nervous about being 'caught short' where there aren't any toilets around. I've got a potty in the car for when he needs it, but I'm not sure what to do about long pram walks to the park and back.
How have you coped with outings in the early days of toilet training? Did you stick to nappies for a while, or just bite the bullet and take a chance that there might be an accident? |

We did put pullups on once or twice just to be safe but we stayed a bit closer to home for the first few weeks as we didn't want to make a habit of putting on pull ups.

We bit the bullet and just took her out in knickers. We also took a spare terry square around with us to clean up accidents as well as extra clothes. We figured accidents were going to happen so we were just prepared.
I do carry a spare nappy in my handbag when we are going out near nap time and when DD has an upset tummy. Learnt that the hard way. |

After a week or so when it became clear TTing DD was going to take ages, I just went out anyway.
I always had a change of clothes and undies, couple of wipes and plastic bag with me (minimum). I'd often have an extra "car bag" that stayed in the car, but had anything up to 3 changes of clothes, undies, wipes, plastic bag, etc, in it, just in case. Some days I went through all that, no matter how many times I reminded her, took her to the toilet, etc. Don't stay home "just in case" - you'll go nuts! TTing can be labour intensive but you'll get there sooner or later. Lou |

DS worn pullups when we went out for a while toliet training. He was pretty good and they were dry most of the time. We just got him into the habit of going to the toilet before we went anywhere. I still always have a spare change of clothes in the car for him.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like we should try and minimise nappy use when out and see how we go. I think I'll be carrying spare trousers and undies and a cloth for mop ups for a while. I think I'll take along a nappy too - but probably more as a safety blanket for me while I get used to this new way of doing things.
