Miranda Lillian - love it. LOVE 'Milly'


Baxter Clark- NMS (not my style - since you dont know all the acronyms yet). I dont mind "Bax' as a but Baxter sounds like a lastname as a first name/ butlers name to me and I dont like that, personally.

You know, each to their own though!

Miranda is beautiful.

I was considering Baxter for a boys name but couldn't decide if it was awesomely underused or a dog's name. The main thing though that did bother me is that its meaning is baker. Though I'm into the meaning and origins of names.

Anyway I did not use it as I had a girl

Firstly thanks to the many people that took the time out to read my not so short original post and even more thanks to those that then took the effort to then post their opinions and best wishes. ALL were helpful including those few that were negative and we very much appreciate this as we were not willing to discuss this with family, friends or work colleagues.

Your input has firmed up our two choices and while we are delighted Miranda Lillian met with almost universal approval, we were relieved that Baxter Clark didn't receive the howls (the word "howls" may become ironic as you read on) of disapproval we expected.

Our main inspiration for Miranda was a character in one of our favourite Australian movies. You can see a short clip here. Being avid non-watchers of "Sex and the City", we were totally ignorant of the fact that one of the characters also carries Miranda as a name. Guess there is a downside to every name

We were surprised that the majority of people either liked or could live with Baxter and very few hated it. Some mentioned it was a pet or more likely a dogs name. We fully expected this as the only use of the name we have seen prior to our current research had been as a dogs name and even then only once and in an obscure film. It was an extremely black comedy/drama from France, about a very naughty bull terrier. The dog and the film were both called "Baxter" (1989) We loved the film (even though it is quite disturbing at times) and I always like the name and since the dog narrates the film and we get an insight into his character I guess I never really thought of him as being a mere animal and thus never associated the name with being just that of an animal. Hard to track down and I've never seen it on Video or DVD but check it out if you get the chance; here is some info if you wish to learn more but like the name itself it won't be to everyones taste. The french actually pronounce it BAX STAIR. Here is a clip I found (sorry no subtitles)

It was surprising and comforting to find that people actually knew human males out there named Baxter (and even a poster that was going to use it if her DD had been a DS). We, like their parents will try and wrest this uncommon name back from the canines. Somebody disliked the "Baker" (as in makes bread) meaning to the name but this actually suits us as breads and pastries are our favourite foods.

You might also like to check out this article I found written by a journalist named "Baxter Holmes" that writes for the LA Times and is know by his colleagues as "the name". I have also just noticed a movie called "The Baxter" (2005) where a Baxter is defined as "the nice, dull guy in a romantic comedy who is dumped at the end of the story for the protagonist". A little negative but since this film only grossed US$181,872 and I'd never seen or heard of it, I;m guessing its influence can be completely ignored. There also seems to be a Canadian TV series where the main character is a teen named Baxter McNab.

Once again many thanks and we now just wait and see when this baby decides to make its way into the world. It needs to hurry up as the doctor will induce on Wednesday.

I like Miranda. I know 3 baby boys (in Sydney) being called Baxter in the last 6 months. I'm not sure what the ranking is for the name though. As I know 3 I presumed it was popular?

Wow - I had know idea there were that many out there. Still, I think it is fairly safe to say it is not going to be the next big thing and probably far from it.
