I don't have twins, but I was adamant that I wanted the one night stay in the birth centre with DH and bub. Unfortunately, I had a PPH so had to stay in hospital on the postnatal ward for 3 nights. I am sooo glad I did. I received amazing care. It may not be what you want, and hopefully you'll be able to leave with your twins sooner rather than later, but if you can't you may find it's different this time around. All the best

I was induced at 38wk with my twins .... both VB and a nice healthy weight so no care needed. I still stayed in for 5 days.

Just thought I'd update this for anyone doing their own research.
I ended up having a very easy natural birth with my boys at 36+5 weeks. I was ready to go home within hours but because they were slightly premature we weren't able to get onto the early discharge program for at least 24 hours. One of my boys also ended up on antibiotics because of a potential sepsis infection, so this held us at hospital for 48 hours. The staff in postnatal were great this time round. However, the bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever experienced, and caused me major pelvic pain. Worse than the pregnancy itself, so I was very grateful to get home. |

Babies were born at 9:15pm and 9:39pm (vaginal delivery, no pain relief or epidural) after a very fast labour on Monday night and we were home Thursday midday (I was agitating to get out of there from Wednesday first thing onwards because I hate hospitals and we had a private midwife who was visiting us at home and we wanted to get home to our toddler, and had plenty of family help at home, but our twins were 36w4d so they didn't want us released early). I was particularly concerned to get out of there because Twin 2 was looking a bit tanned and I was freaking out he would be held back for jaundice, but not necessary in the end.
Twin 1 did end up having feeding issues and lost too much weight and ended up on topup ebm bottles and then was fully ebm fed after 3 months. Maybe the hospital would have picked that up earlier but I doubt it as they weren't big on weighing. I had a lot of nipple damage but the hospital midwives were crap at dealing with that anyway so it wouldn't have done me any good to stay. They were of the "hold boob and ram baby's head" persuasion. You always know you're in good hands when they start up with that caper! In my experience it is sometimes hard to remember that THE HOSPITAL IS NOT A PRISON AND THEY CANNOT MAKE YOU STAY. We were at RPA as private patients and had our own room and it was fine, but there was only a single bed (husband was styaing with me on the couch), the food was inadequate for someone breastfeeding twins (they started giving me 2 meals!) and they would not let us remove the babies from the maternity ward which was just insane because see above and also: our babies, not RPA's babies. I really needed some sunshine by the time we escaped. |
