I am actually curious why you say that if you dont mind me asking (genuinely curious) My DD had both shots. My friend who does not vax didnt have either. My DD did have jaundice (minor) , but many other friend's bubbas had the shots and didnt get jaundice. |

We were in the uk. Hep b is not given or on the schedule for most people. I think we did vit k injection, but I can't remember, but she did have a touch of jaundice. We have kept to Australian schedule since coming except for the chicken pox one (not required to get immunisation allowance) as it is not on the uk schedule ( the NHs web site says that it's not necessary). We will readdress when she is older.

We chose oral vitamin K...due for the next dose the end of this week! There was a study about whether the injection is linked to jaundice...my other kids ALL had the vit k shot and ALL had jaundice - this little one had the oral dose and not even a touch of jaundice! What did the study say? Or are you just going to rely on the experience of your kids to show a link? |

We did oral vit k at birth and no hep B needle. We will continue vaccinating according to the schedule, though will likely space out each set over a few weeks. I did this with DS2 and found he tolerated them better.

QUOTE I do vaccinate, but will be choosing oral vitamin K for this baby and no hep B at birth. This for me too. My other two had oral Vit K and did have the Hep B. For me its more that I don't want their first experience of life to be a jab with a needle. You do have to be very sure they get all three doses of oral Vitamin K though or it doesn't work. For this one I am actually considering having the shot just because I know I will be very busy after the birth and don't want to risk missing a dose. |

Both my kids had both shots, one had slight jaundice (born at 37 weeks), one had none (born full term).
Questioning the link between Vit K and jaundice, as PP said any link to the study? |

We did not want either the hep b or vitamin k administered at birth but as they had to use a small amount of vacuum suction to get dd out, it was compulsory hospital policy to give vitamin k. Faced with that situation, we chose the oral vitamin k which is spread out over 3 doses unlike the injection.

QUOTE Questioning the link between Vit K and jaundice, as PP said any link to the study? I'd be interested too. I've not been able to find such a link. There are a few articles from the 1950s questioning it but research shows us that jaundice in newborns is common (physiological or pathological). Ironically a symptom of VKDB is yellowing of the skin and eyes. |

QUOTE Does vitamin K cause jaundice? There were reports of hemolytic anemia and hyperbilirubinemia severe enough to cause kernicterus in the mid 1950s with high doses (50mg) of vitamin K2 (menadione). As a result, use of this form of vitamin K was abandoned. We now give infants vitamin K1 (phytonadione). Vitamin K1 has been associated with hyperbilirubinemia only in high doses (25 – 30mg) particularly in premies, though the effect was present to a lesser degree in term infants. This has not been a problem at therapeutic doses, though this concern is why we give babies <1500g a smaller (0.5mg) dose. http://newborns.stanford.edu/VitaminK.html |
