Hi all!! Was just wondering if anyone here has a gastric bypass??

I have had a gastric sleeve and love it

I have a band, however it has moved so I'm having it taken out and at the same time bypass. I looked at the sleeve, but I like with the bypass it can be reversed if need be.

My sister in the UK had the gastric bypass done at Christmas she has so far lost 5 stone. The only negative so far is that she cannot eat any meat at all even chewed really well. Just one teaspoon causes her to be in a lot of pain.

I've not had a gastric bypass but there are a couple of things that do give me pause about them.

They are malabsorptive rather than just restrictive which means two important things. One, you might have problems getting enough nutrition/vitamins/minerals out of your food despite the fact that you are eating as your body can no longer digest and absorb it to the same degree. Secondly is dumping which sounds like a very uncomfortable thing to endure .

Sleeve gastrectomy is the procedure that is in vogue at the moment. It is a restrictive procedure (ie. you physically eat less) that has a favourable effect on ghrelin which is a large factor in physical hunger and possibly weight regain. Despite the lack of long term data it is shaping up to be very successful and so far no long term adverse effects have been uncovered. A major advantage after the short term higher risk involved in the operation itself is that no food is off limits, so your diet can include meat/bread and other foods that traditionally cause problems following other procedures.

My understanding is that gastric bypass has stronger evidence in its favour when it comes to type 2 diabetes but sleeve gastrectomy still has a positive outcome on this also.

My two cents worth is to consider the sleeve gastrectomy ahead of a bypass. This still leaves the option of a future dudodenal switch should it be decided that a bypass could give you further benefits. It allows you to take drastic action against your weight whilst still leaving your options open a little.

Plus, with a bypass you get "dumping syndrome"

As a Type 2 Diabetic prior to my sleeve, my diabetes rectified post op. I am now no longer considered Type 2 and I haven;'t had any diabetes medications since 1 week prior to my operation (so nearly 3 months now).
