My poor eldest DD who is away from home now at uni just texted me and told me half her molar just broke off. I'm not even sure what to tell her... other than get to a dentist as soon as she can! But I'm wondering what they can do? It's not like you can glue it back on or anything... It's never happened to me or anyone I know so I have no clue.

I'm not a bad mum, I'm a good mum with low expectations
My back molar(wisdom tooth actually) did this only a mont or so ago, they pulled it, could have done a crown or whatever but thhe cost would have been large as you can imagine. If it's a back molar and she can do without it then I'd just have it pulled.

Not sure about an 18 yo but DD9 came out of the pool missing nearly 1/2 her front tooth the other day (adult tooth) after an altercation with the concrete. With visions of many hours and $$$$ in the dentists's chair, we now have a white filling. Couple of hundred $$$$ ( better than $1000's) and less than 1 hr in the chair. (mid to long term solution)
Given that your DD is an adult though, the solution maybe slightly more complex....hope not

It depends how much fell off. This happened to me and we were able to put in a filling, it happened to my mum and she got a crown. She lost more tooth than I did.

I had a huge chunk of my back molar chip off last year. I went to the dentist, was given a numbing jab and she scraped out some junk (not sure if this is a common experience but my tooth had cracked and then broke off 2 weeks after the initial cracking) and then filled it.

She told me I would likely need root canal as there was such a large hole. I haven't had any pain and she said that would be the sign of needing root canal. If it does get painful, I'm thinking I'll get her to rip it out. It'll cost less and be a hell of a lot less painful!

Hope your DD is ok! It's quite an off experience.

I had the same thing happen to me when I was 22, the dentist gave me the option of pulling the tooth or a getting a porcelain crown. I chose the crown. It cost about $800 (in 2003) and the dentist let me pay it off over 6 months as he knew I was a student.

KrisMs, I also lost half my front tooth when I was 8 (altercation with a bicycle) and got a white filling. It kept chipping over the years and having to be re-built for several hundred dollars each time. I ended up getting a porcelain crown on my front tooth in 1999 ($1200) and it has been fantastic.

A crown should last at least 20 years, so works out to be cheaper in the long run!

Thanks for the replies... I will have to find out exactly what happened first and which bits have broken off... I'm hoping it's not too bad and they can save it, but we'll have to wait and see I guess until she can see someone.

I lost a decent size chunk of my molar on monday. The dentist used some sort of base to protect the nerve, then built the filling up slowly from there. It cost $200.

I've had a few molars break and the dentist has just made up the tooth with filling. They put a mould around the tooth and fill it with the stuff they make fillings out of, after cleaning out any rotten tooth. I was surprised at how inexpensive it was. One got an absess and had to be pulled eventually but the others are still going strong. I've got another one yet to be done and a crown also. My teeth are crap as I've recently found out that I grind them in my sleep. I wish I'd known that 20 years ago!
