My almost 4 month old DS (gee that time has flown ) is suffering from a red, itchy scalp. At first it seemed to be a case of cradle cap but that has mainly cleared up with only a small patch of the dry flaky skin remaining. However a big portion of his head is very red still and it is obviously still itchy for the lil guy as when we got him up this morning he had used the hand he'd gotten out of his wrap to scratch his head and take some skin off (so that there is a red, raw, bleeding patch - very small though, less than the size of my pinky nail).

We are off to the chemist this afternoon to see what they can advise us to do, but was wondering if any other mums/dads had advice on what we could use to help relive the itchiness and stop the redness. We have tried sorbolene (using it after every feed, so 6 times a day), oil and paw paw ointment but none seem to really help.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I hate to see my poor son's head all red and itchy - especially since he is too young to understand not to scratch it.

Hi, have you seen your CHN or GP about this? That's what I would suggest, this is not a usual thing for a 4month old.
Do you have a history of ezcema, dermatitis or allergies?
What is your baby drinking? ie exclusive bfing, formula feeding or combination.
Who knows it could be dietary related, allergic related, that's why I suggest you see a health professional in addition to the Pharmacist and asking here.

what soap do u use?? I had to change DS2's soap to (sorry the name escapes me but its a soap free wash from the chemist) thats what happens when i used normal baby soap on him

We only use sorbolene to wash him - it has no mineral oils and we have used it since birth and had no problems.

He is exclusively BF and my diet hasn't changed at all so I don't think it is that.

I have spoken to our CHN who referred us to the pharmacist and then if next week it hasn't cleared up then we will try the doctor's.

My mum thinks it may just be the skin healing after the cradle cap...so perhaps that's all it is??

ETA: I have chronic hives and used to suffer hayfever (not so much now), my husband has asthma and I had ezcema as a baby. I am on one polaramine and one claratyne per day to help with my hives but this is under the supervision of a dermatologist who is aware of my breastfeeding. The paediatrician also said it would be ok for me to be on these medications too.

My DS had eczema on his head when he was about 3 months old. He got it on his forehead too though. I used MooGoo the most (i tried sooo many creams) ,although also ended up being prescribed a steroid cream when it got really bad. It disappeared for good when he was about 7 months old

I'd suggest going and seeing a Dr as its no fun for them to be itching all the time!!!

Are there any foods you are allergic or sensitive to?
I suppose I'm thinking about ? anything in your diet that may be leading to a skin reaction (please know that I'm not anywhere near an expert, I just like pondering). Especially since you both have an allergic/atopic history.
I was wondering if you might need further referral to paed re his skin and ? dietary exclusions for you. ? Cows milk products. The link below talks about these things, it may be of interest to you.

eta, I am thinking of causes of the skin problem rather than treatment, as finding the cause leads to the correct treatment, or prevention.
I hope you baby is comfortable and has healthy skin soon.

Try "10% UREA IN TA 0.02%"
Apply twice a day. Keep in refri.

My son has eczema on his cheeks.
The doctor gave me this cream 3 days ago.
Now, my baby cheek is quite better.
