Warning the link is not an easy read. It features the story of a woman who was ordered to abort and be forcibly sterilised by the courts. The decision was overturned, but it's still a very scary abuse. People love to assert that certain others should never reproduce. I've done the same myself when looking from the outside at women in my own family who clearly resent their own choices. Women who clearly hate their chosen roles as mothers and despise their children whilst also declaring how much they love them and how difficult the conflict is. How about when the choice is taken away though? I've been listening this week to stories of disabled women being sterilised unknowingly. I've also heard yet more horror stories from India about surrogacy. There are still far too many examples of women having their choices removed by power imbalances that are being abused. And now I've read this and I'm questioning if the ideals listed will ever be achievable. What do you think? Unattainable ideal, or achievable goal? I'm inclined to thinking it's unattainable as the uncontrollable variable is free will and people will still make poor choices regardless of how much "education" they're provided with. But what I enjoyed about reading the link is that it encourages ALL OF US to take a stand and step up to model responsible behaviour. And more importantly to get involved where otherwise we might turn away and tell ourselves it's not our business. For whatever reason. QUOTE A thousand of us might have stepped up at any time and changed the way this worked - and each of us did not. A whole society, a whole culture might have stepped up and offered more.
