Basically long story short, there has been an accident, everyone is ok aside for a minor burn and some bruising. Car B Is most likely a write off, Car A almost undamaged (a couple of tiny marks).

Car B ran up the back of Car A when coming around a corner. Car B is at fault due to it being a nose to tail, that is not in question.

The driver of Car A was asked for their drivers license and expiry date and they advised that it was a Sri Lankan Drivers License and that they do not have expiry date nor do they have an Australian Drivers License.

Does anyone know if a Sri Lankan drivers license has an expiry date and also is a Sri Lankan drivers license is valid here for driving? Do you require an international license to be able to drive here if you do not hold an Australian drivers License.

It may vary from sate to state but in QLD an overseas licence is valid for driving.

I'm glad everyone is ok. Obviously the police weren't involved, were insurance details exchanged as well?

In NSW you can legally drive on an overseas licence too, provided you are just here as a tourist/visitor/student/on a temporary working visa and not a permanent resident. If you are a permanent resident I believe you need to convert to a NSW licence? So in your case you would need to know the Sri Lankan driver's visa/residency status.

As far as I know, an international Driving licence must be exchanged for an Australian one if you are a permanent resident after 3 months in NSW

Yes insurance details were exchanged as were our details and registration numbers. Insurance company has been called and claim lodged so all good there.

The driver of Car A was in a work ute, so could only be on a working visa.

I am just trying to figure out whether he was really licensed to drive here or not. I know insurance will sort it all out but just interested as to what the requirements were.

If it is a work ute then he is just a registered driver of that vehicle. It is up to the company he works for to make sure he is eligible to drive said vehicle and they would/should of run checks on him.

When my DH was using a company vehicle (he's a permanent resident) he had to provide a licence check from the police, basically stating that he had no infringements. My guess is that the company never checked this guys licence as how would they get any such details from Sri Lanka? It means that any damage done to their vehicle may not be covered by their insurance. But as that car is not at fault I'm not sure what would happen

Yes, when we moved back, we had UK licences and had to convert them to Aussie ones within 3 months, or they became invalid.

His work company might be up for a lot of cost in repairs!

I have driven work vehicles in other countries, and not been "working there".

The qld rules say you need to be on a permanent visa before your intl licence is invalid. So just because someone is working for an Australian company does not mean they need a Australian License (I believe)

My DP was in an accident in a work truck on 3 Feb last year (he is fully licenced), we got a letter of demand from the insurance company of the other driver and sent this on to DP's employer. Nothing was done obviously as last week I got another letter of demand, this time from a debt collection agency. Since DP has now died I left a very irate messge on the company's answer service and posted the notice on to them.
