Hope your friend's son is OK.

Yes it does show the importance of TI. I told MIL (when she was planning on coming to Paris with us) that if she could not get TI she was not to come. I didn't want her losing her house (and potentially ours) if she got sick. Thankfully it took much searching but we did find one willing to cover for pre existing heart condition and on Warfrin.

IsolaBella - I'm another one who would love to know the name of the company, can you PM me please?

FIL has a heart condition and they live in the UK, which means we only see them every 2 or 3 years when we manage to pack the kids up for a long-haul nightmare flight. It would be wonderful if we could fix the insurance problem so they could come to us sometimes!

DH worked for a company that looked after a lot of the repatriations for O/S injuries, and that was enough for both of us to be sure to never travel without travel insurance. Hundreds of thousands of dollars for seemingly "simple" accidents like a broken bone - it's terrifying to think how wrong things could go.

I just purchased our Travel Insurance this morning for our September trip to the US. I figure the earlier you get it, the better right?

Yes, exactly. The free travel insurance that comes with your credit card is great until you need to claim!!

We haven't had a problem with it. Mum had to be treated in hospital for pneumonia when in the US. The bills that I saw (I was power of attorney while they were away and got all their mail) totalled over $25K, and that's just the ones they didn't send directly to the insurer. Mum and Dad never paid a cent, and the insurance was through their credit card.

Yes, because from the time you purchase your insurance you are covered for cancellations and amendments due to unforeseen circumstances.

I firmly believe that it should be law that Australian residents are not permitted to leave the country without proof of insurance cover. It's such a small cost added on to your trip.

People who don't have it then complain about the 'gubmint' not helping then make me stabby.

I thought that CC insurance was OK, it is written by Zurich, we are with citibank and were not planning on buying any more.
Is there something I should know about regarding this?
Thanks

You need to check the terms and conditions carefully, the cover is limited - I think it only covers the cardholder for example, not the whole family. It isn't as comprehensive as other travel insurance policies. It only covers international travel, not domestic. etc etc. I don't know all the details but just make sure you read the whole policy for exclusions, $$ limits and so on.

My CC insurance is fantastic, covers very high amounts and some expenses are covered regardless of amount. It also covers 1 companion (so spouse, partner, travel buddy) and any minor children, as long as you've spent a certain amount of the trip costs on that credit card. I do agree it's wise to read through the policy, though original.gif We may be taking out a small bit of additional insurance to cover rental car excess as that's not part of the basic coverage on our CC.
