I can't.

I've tried - oh how I've tried! But it usually results in me getting very hungry and very frustrated, while everyone around me eats up all their food with seeming ease.

So now I ask for a fork when I go to asian restaurants, but I feel very embarassed and also a bit rude to do so. But at least I get to enjoy eating my meal!

If you can't use chopsticks do you feel the same way?

It's something I have always I have always struggled with! Funnily enough when we went to Japan I could (even rice!) but now I have come home I can't!!! I have tried repeatedly but in vain. It must have been because I had to! I am in the asking for a fork camp and yes sometimes it feels embarrassing!

I used to be fairly unco but then about 10 years ago I spent 3 months in a chopstick only land... I am really rather adept now!

We use chopsticks several times a week at home.

I can use them.

It annoys DP no end everytime we have Chinese I HAVE to eat with them (he refuses to, I find it fun), so DS1 & 2 try to aswell..... with disasterous effects! I have brought them a pair of chopsticks that are joined at one end, It makes it a little easier to hold them & get food in their mouths not everywhere else.

Maybe you could take your own pair of joined together chopsticks when you go out?

Years ago I couldn't ..... but DH taught me (before we were married). I love Japanese food, so I just had to learn! Asking for fork in a Japanese restaurant was just too embarrassing for me.

The joined pairs are good for learning but I reckon persistance is the key. Get some at home to practice with maybe?

Yes, I can. The kids are also learning. If you have trouble, this is what I bought the kids and they are almost ready to be moved to the next stage. It's great for developing hand writing skills (and impressing the noodle shop owners when we eat out!) They also have products for adults.

How grand it must be, to be the chosen one...
No I can't. Not for want of trying either, but I am not very coordinated at the best of times blush.gif

I always ask for a fork, but it makes me feel really unsophisticated (dare I say bogan...)
