Thought I'd come into the book section to see what THE latest book/series is (aside from Hunger Games) and found this thread.
Thank you is all I can say. I've perused the thread with book depository open on another tab and now have a few books on the way which will hopefully keep me going for a while. On another note, I really need to get a kindle. QUOTE I am re-reading Harry Potter, all 7 of them! I had book 7 for about 2 years before I actually read it. I was insistant that I read the whole series all the way through together. I stuck fast to this thought despite many people telling me I was mad and I'd never get round to it. Somehow, I managed to not find out the ending of the last book at all (I think not seeing the movies AT the movies helped). I'm so glad I stuck to my guns. I finally found myself in the right frame of mind and started at book one. It took me about 2 months all up (amongst the kids activities etc) to get through them all BUT I believe it made the last book soooo much better having the first 6 fresh in my mind. It took me about another 4 weeks before I could let them go and start another book I loved them that much. |

Finally finished To kill a mockingbird and have to admit I did not really enjoy it... I mean it was a nice enough book but I don't really get what all the fuss is about?
Has anyone else had the same experience when reading 'classics'? for me it's now on to The girl with the dragon tattoo-trilogy... |

Has anyone else had the same experience when reading 'classics'? I think the trick with reading classics, especially classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby and A Catcher in the Rye to to think of the context in which they are written and what they said about society at the time - they might not seem entirely relevant to us today however, without those books, our "today" might not ever have existed... |

I've just finished The Mothers' Group. I didn't love it. It was like being on EB! Parts of it were infuriating, little was shocking. It didn't live up to its hype at all, imo.

Funny you should say that: Catcher in the rye is actually one of my all time favorites and I have read it about once a year since I read it for the first time at 15... and I find some new perspective on life each time I read it... I know I should imagine the time and era of To kill a mockingbird but it just didn't have the same effect on me I guess. I mean I got the message and how she portrayed crucial ideas about racism through unspoilt childrens' eyes but overall the book didn't grip me IYKWIM... Well I guess I can't like every book in the world... (but I also has a weird reading habits as a teenager and liked stuff like The Red and The Black by Stendhal or lots of Camus when I was 15...don;t know if I would still enjoy it today, so maybe my mind is deteriorating in its appreciation of classics as I said onto read The girl with the dragon tattoo (very intellectually unchallenging I hope |

Just finished and LOVED the Chaos walking series. If you liked the hunger games I would recommend you give this series a go!
Also read over the holidays: Jodi Picoult - Wolf something or other - bit blah - not as good as her previous books IMHO Have read a few more but will have to look them up on my reader and get back to you all! |

I finished all the Harry Potters (again!) and I am now reading Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood. Since I am loving the TV show on the ABC, I thought I would give the books a go, and I am really enjoying it.
100% agree with you about Lone Wolf ssss This post has been edited by 71Cath: 23/04/2012, 09:33 AM |
