pleasebeadvised I am 34 weeks I think, geez I've forgotten, due 26th May. Thanks, that makes sense re the induction. I am not on insulin or meds so just going with diet for now. I am pretty strict with carbs, advised at first clinic that I should have 17 serves of carbs per day. I am finding about 11 to be more accurate, I am also accounting for foods that don't seem to contribute according to the diet plan ie pumpkin is meant to not count, well I have to account for it. Upping my protein has helped the most. My safest meals at definitely plain old meat n 3 veg though things like lentils and legumes, even though they have carbs seem to keep my levels down. Tacos with mince and kidney beans is great for example and I can easily have 3 with a low reading.

I can have rice but am strict on 2/3 rds cup cooked. I measure it out. It s sauces that get me, too easy to underestimate how much I've used. I have only been having basmati rice too, meant to be lower gi.

Does anyone know whether, if it comes down to it bubs can have glucose rather than formula? Not sure what's the best but I really wan to be successful in breastfeeding. I am no good a expressing either it will certainly attempt to if it's advised.

I see my Ob on Tuesday so will try to get some answers from him as well.

I had my OB appointment today and got to see the Head OB who is really lovely original.gif She was happy to bump my due date up to match my NT scan date, so I'm officially 33 weeks tomorrow and due date is 1st June now. Really quick way to shave a week off your pregnancy!

I have to have fortnightly scans as there's still some worry over fluid levels being too low and bubs growth, going off of the scans I've had already there is some concern that she may plateau and start to stop growing well, but I have another scan in two weeks which will give a better indication. Induction is all set to be booked for 17th May, at 38 weeks, so just 5 very short weeks! (unless bub is not doing well then it'll be at 37 weeks instead) I only have two antenatal clinic appointments left so hopefully it all just flies by biggrin.gif Getting very excited now!

Glucose/Formula I may be wrong, but I understood that glucose was administered via a drip, which was only used as a last resort and something that you wouldn't want to put bub through unless dire circumstances. I have wanted to breastfeed the last two times and was able to do just a colostrum feed , for #3 to get the right levels, but #4 just wouldn't get over that line so he had a colostrum feed and then about 10ml of formula after one feed and he was fine for the next feed and we were allowed to go home. My milk came in very soon after that so he kept on improving. I'd say that policy changes hospital to hospital so it might be better to ask now and know where they stand.

Yep Chiara, I said to the OB today that I was getting increasingly disappointed that I couldn't get my levels down and she said that its all hormonal and there's not a lot I can do, especially if my after meals levels are so well controlled. Just have to deal with what comes I suppose! I'm just hoping that it plays out the same way as my other pregnancies, it tends to hit it's peak at 34 weeks and then starts to ease off. So one more week to go hopefully!

These next few weeks are going to be interesting for everyone I think!

Well Easter show was fun but a GD fail! I tried really hard not to succumb but ended up with a hot dog (really there were no good food choices). I tested on the train on the way home and it was over 8!!!

Will try very hard tomorrow!

Hi girls hoping I can join in here. First of all I have to appoligise for any typos and errors. I'm typing this from hospital on my iPhone.

I'm 30 weeks and was diagnosed at about 25 with gd.

I'm currently in hospital and have been for 2 nights now, it doesn't look like I will be going home anytime soon with the levels I had this morning and last night.

So basically they are saying I have out of control diabeties I'm also on metformin 500 twice a day.

My levels are 99% of the time above the acceptable levels.

Im positive they though I was cheating or not eating what I was supposed to eating as they were suprised that on
Their diet my levels are still high.

Today they have me testing just before eating and then the 2 hours after.

Yesterday my levels were like this......

Fasting 5.9
B fast 7.2
Lunch 7.6
Dinner 6.9
Random they requested at 10 which was an
Hour after a snack 6.8

This morning my fasting level was 6.5!

I guess I'm hoping someone else has been through something similar. From what I hear it's likely I will start insulin, if this happened to you did you have to stay in ling ? As I hear they Like to keep you a few days to make sure the levels drop.

Just wondering if I could join in too? I am almost 35 weeks (due 21 May) and was diagnosed with GD at 20 weeks. I am currently on insulin (novomix 30) and take 36 units in the morning and 22 in the evening before dinner - and I am pretty sure they will up the dose on Tuesday when I go back to the clinic sad.gif as my levels are under control but only just (getting lots of 6.8's and 6.9's which are just barely under their limit of 7.0).

~nikki~ - I did not get admitted to hospital at all. They just sent me to the diabeties educator who explained all about the diet etc, showed me how to inject, gave me the script and sent me home original.gif I just have to ring the clinic if I get 3 readings in 5 days above 7.0 2 hours after eating, or over 5.5 fasting so they can adjust my insulin level. They also get me to come to the antenatal diabeties clinic each fortnight where they check my record book etc and they do any adjusting of insulin, diet then.

I have also found that many of the 'safe' foods give me really high levels. The only bread I can eat is the tip top 9 grains bread, and breakfast everyday is kellogs sustain - anything else for breakfast and my levels are insane all day!...its just trial and error really to see what your body can and cant handle.

Has anyone else found they are getting huge bruises where they inject? I am sure the doctors must think someone is beating me up!

Hi all,

I got the diagnosis of GD last Thursday. Spent Friday afternoon at the specialists, and had a lot of blood tests etc, learnt how to use the monitor etc. At this stage she is confident I can control it with diet alone, and I probably won't need insulin at all. No guarantees of course.

Readings were all good on Friday and yesterday, but today they are way over. I have the flu, and am feeling really rubbish, and didn't get a lot of sleep last night. The doctor said this can have an impact on my levels, so I'm hoping that's all it is.

I'm finding the diet really difficult. I am gluten free as well, and so all my portions are different to what they allocate on the diet plan. I feel like I'm just not eating enough, but I'm not sure what I can eat. I see the dietician tomorrow, so hopefully that will help.

I'm feeling really overwhelmed by it all at the moment. sad.gif

~nikki~ Sorry to hear you have been admitted. I find that quite unusual as I have been having levels similar to yours. At the moment I am seeing an endocronologist at the hospital on a weekly basis and phone her once a week to check my medication levels (insulin 24pm 9am) are spot on. I also have a diabetes educator/midwife I can access. I'm also monitored by a midwife weekly and OB fortnightly. I hope your levels are sorted soon and you can go home: it's scary sometimes when you can't manage them.

domlachlan Welcome! I was getting bruises as well, until I got used to injecting. I also found it has got more painful as the dose has increased. The trick is to make sure you are putting the needle in at a right angle to your belly and not moving it once it is inside.

MAtthias' Mum GD is so overwhelming! I know exactly how you feel, and I'm not finding it gets easier sad.gif I hope the dietician can give you a hand.

Preachers Wife You did well not to give in to all the other yummy things there as well!

Nikki I can't believe that they have put you in hospital! I have heard people being hospitalised for GD but they have been completely out of control, on loads of insulin and they have really put them in there to monitor diet more closely etc. I'm really surprised that they haven't started you on insulin to control your levels first because metformin can be really unreliable with controlling levels that are consistently high. I hope that they get it sorted soon so you can go home.

And if I ate all that for breakfast my levels would be sky high as well. I have two pieces of multigrain toast with vegemite and a cup of tea to get back high 5's and if I add cheese then it goes mid 6's.

Welcome domlachhan I never used to get bruising unless I went in on an angle, but have found with the higher 20unit overnight dose that I am getting a bruise each time, my stomach is looking very spotty!

Matthias' mum I hope that the dietician can give you some answers, I don't have a clue when it comes to gluten free so am not much help! But if you do feel hungry then you can eat more of the 'free' foods that you know you don't react to to fill you up. I sometimes zap a steam bag of vegies and munch on them original.gif

PBA Hope you have a good week this week!

AFM School holidays are over and the house can return to normal! I actually have no appointments this week which is a first for a long time, so I plan on becoming a vegetable and enjoying my couch as much as possible LOL My SPD has really flared up this week and walking/lifting my feet/getting up and down is becoming increasingly painful so I'll be glad of the break! I also booked us a family beach holiday for the last week in April, we haven't had a family break in three years, so I'm looking forward to just relaxing with everyone and enjoying the time before new bub arrives. I'll be 36 weeks exactly when we leave and it's only 1.5 hours drive away so hopefully bub behaves and stays put! Anyway, better go do the school/kindy run!

Ladies, just a quick question. Levels after meals have been (99%) good, usually between five and six, but I haven't had a fasting level under five yet. I've been testing since last Wednesday, so not quite a week. With my last pregnancy I needed insulin for overnight, to get good fasting levels and expect the same now. Should I make an appointment this week to see the diabetes nurse educator, or wait until next week (tues) to see the endo??

Matthias Mum hope the dietician had some advice, I'm not gluten free, so not much help either. I know it did take me a few days/a week to adjust and start eating at strict times with meals and snacks, rather than grazing through the day as I normally would. I found keeping some snacks like raw vege sticks in the fridge to grab and a huge bottle of water around good. A swig of water seems to keep the craving at bay.

Nikki I hope you're home soon, hospital can't be fun. That also seems like a lot for breakfast. Ivebeen having two weetbix with sliced banana and a small amount of milk and that's it. Everybody reacts differently to things, hopefully it will calm down soon.
