Hi!

I am nearly finished my Elevit with Iodine 100 tablets (last blister pack) and wondering if there are any good alternatives from taking this pregnancy supplement.

Elevit does not have Omega 3 and wondering if should I switch to another brand that has omega 3 or take a separate omega 3 supplement

My mum kindly bought some bioCeuticals InNatal supplements for me. The lady at the store said not to take fish oil during pregnancy because of the risk of mercury traces.

I feel I need fish oil for depression issues so i just take it separately. I used to take Blackmores but to fit all the stuff in you have to take 2 at a time

Hi Miso,

I used to take elevit as well. But omega 3s (or more specifically DHA) are very important for baby's brain and given I don't eat any fish I am now taking :
1) Pregnancy Platinum multi vitamins (Nature's Own); and
2) Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA.

I've found that the majority of supplements on the market don't contain anywhere near the recommended level of DHA (most are well below) so I went for an additional omega 3 supplement. The nordic naturals one is made specifically for pregnancy (obviously) and is endorsed by the American Pregnancy Association.

I have been taking Cenovis Pregnancy and Breastfeeding tablets, they seem to be working well enough for me and are more affordable.

Blackmores pregnancy and breastfeeding gold is your best option.

I work in a pharmacy and have been told by all 3 pharmacists at my store that it's the best option if you want omega 3. There is 300mcg less of folic acid in blackmores compared to elevit but blackmores still has 500mcg of folic acid in there which is sufficient original.gif Also, the fish oil in the blackmore pregnancy gold is not only good for baby's brain development but for your joints too! Your joints are very likely going to suffer during the 3rd trimester so the blackmores works out more beneficial for your last few months of pregnancy.

One last thing, quite a few pregnant women I've spoken to have said elevit did nothing to help constipation, therefore they were always constipated while taking it. The blackmores pregnancy gold doesn't seem to be as bad for constipation...doesn't take it away completely but definitely helps!

I'm 21 weeks and taking blackmores and the thing I love about it most is that it's a capsule that slides down to throat easily, not a massive powdery tablet that's hard to swallow like elevit.

I took Elevit throughout my first pregnancy and had issues with constipation. Although it is not about the price, I cannot afford to take Elevit this time around. Spoke to my Ob and I am taking Fefol which is an Iron & Folate supplement, has 300mcg folate, and am also taking Cenovis Women's Multi Once daily.

I've been taking blackmore pregnancy and breastfeeding gold since Jan 2010 just before I fell pregnant with DS1 and then took it while breastfeeding DS1 and now taking it for #2. I have no issues with it and would recommend it to my friends.

I have heard that Elevit can cause constipation and sometimes even make nausea worse.

My friend who is a natropath takes the inNatal ones but I think she has to take extra iron?

She also said Blackmores are the least synthetic of all the over the counter ones so not sure if that makes them better?

I guess we are all different and we just have to try and see what works best for each of us?

Hope this helps!

thanks guys!!

i am choosing to stick to Elevit cause its got a bit more iron in it cause i am soo low in iron (i cant stand eating red meat) and i am taking bioglan super fish oil for mother and baby which is tested for mercury and pcb (whatever that is)

Elevit seems to make me go to the toilet and no constipation there Tounge1.gif and i saw how big the other capsules/tablets were and i don't think i can those down Tounge1.gif
