I have a DS5 who has always had some challenges managing his frustration and controlling anger outbursts. Recently my GP recommended the book "The Explosive Child" by Ross Greene. Just wondering if anyone has read this book or had any success with the techniques ? I am about halfway through reading it and it's making a lot of sense but after some real life experiences.
Thanks in advance, |

Thank you for your post.
Based on your comments I went and borrowed the book. Amazing.............. I am attempting to use the strategies...not much luck at the moment as he is only 6 with slightly delayed speech.. Please let me know how you go. |

I haven't read it, but I want that book. Explosive sounds like a good description for my DD(5)s emotional outbursts.

I really like that book, my favourite part being how emotional/explosive responses of the kids are just like any learning delay and needs to be given help to be overcome. Just expecting a certain behaviour, or using reward charts, is not going to teach the child how to manage their reactions. It would be like presenting a non reader with $1000 if they could just read a book. It's not going to happen. They need to be taught the skills first.
Just flicking through I found a quote that resonates with me, 'I did have to come to grips with the fact I didn't get the child I hoped for'. Unfortunately for me it seems that DS2 is going to be just like his big brother (who has improved so much in the past year)'- but this book kind of shown where I could have helped DS1 more when he was DS2's age and hopefully DS2 won't be so explosive |
