With my kids (three of them) often if you jiggled them (gently) after a feed you'd clearly hear milk sloshing around in them.... pretty big clue that a burb was neccessary
In general, if they haven't burped immediately after a feed, then you have to keep working on them until they do. Two of the best techniques I found for burping were: - Sit them on my knee, with one hand on their belly/chest (and supporting their chin with my thumb and 1st finger ) and bounce my foot, while gently patting their back with the other hand. It worked best if you positioned them so they were leaning forward a little, and their legs were bent at more than 90 degrees, increasing the pressure on their belly. - Sit them on the edge of something then put your hand on their front and lean them forward until they are fully resting on your hand/wrist and you can pick them up so they are lying on their front, on your hand/wrist/forearm. Don't hold them dead flat, keep their hips below their head, and keep their neck straight so the wind has an easy path out. Keep pressure on their belly with your hand, and gently pat their back with your other hand. This position worked very well for me. My kids would usually get all their wind out in one impressive burp, but sometimes it would take up to 15 mins or more. if one position isn't working after 5 minutes, try something else. And with a newborn only one week old he/she won't be able to support their head without help so make sure you do this. It might take ages to get the wind out of bubs but if you don't it will probably cause problems later (poor sleeping/crying/being too tired to drink next feed... it becomes a vicious cycle) If bub wakes up screaming in the middle of their normal sleep time for no obvious reason and is all tense its likely they didn't bring up all their wind after their last feed and now its gone too far through their system to burp up, and it must come out the other end. To help get that out lie them on their back and make their legs go in a peddling a bike motion. You can bring each knee right up, so it puts some pressure on their belly. Also try holding them with their back against your belly (best done while you are sitting) and bring both of their knees up to their chest at once to gently squeeze their belly, often this will get them to let rip. Often an unsettled grizzly baby will be as tense as a board and hold their legs dead straight then you get a massive fart or burp out of them and they go all floppy and make happy contented sighs then drop off to sleep in seconds. Its awesome! Hope this helps, try different things until you find what works. Good luck! Hello DaddyT
I read in Robin Barker's book "Babylove" (a fantastic book btw) that not all cultures burp their baby, so I hardly ever did. When I told people why I did this, they seemed shocked that I would chop and choose aspects of different cultures. Anyway .. Don't worry, first few weeks are bewildering but you will become an expert, in no time! This post has been edited by Fennel Salad: 20/12/2011, 08:42 PM |

Mate i had the same problem but finally got the ball rolling. I always used to pick the boy up sling him over the shoulder and make sure both his arms were over my shoulder and just pat his back where it sounds hollow for a bit. Then i would do the rub from his bum up to the base of his neck. After a bit if there was no burps or farts i would just hold him up and give his hips a little bit of a move around side to side front to back then repeat the process. Never failed in getting some wind out. Now that he is getting older he usually gets a bit out himself when i sit him up but still i hold him up to my shoulder and just do the bum pat for 10 to 15 mins.

Are women allowed to comment in this forum? I'm not sure, so apologies if I'm not supposed to....
The way we always managed to get wind up (this is what our nurse taught us) is after feeding, lay them on their back with your hand supporting behind them and then slowly raise them upright from 90 degrees to vertical... make sense? Sorry, it's not very easy to put into words, but imagine they're on one of those back stretching inverting machines that tip you upside down, that's the angle to raise them at (without holding them upside obviously otherwise more than wind will come up, hehe). We would do this a few times and never had any trouble with wind. You'll get lots of suggestions but then you'll find one that works for your bub every time and life will be heaven! |

Yeh we were shown that too. I try a number of different things after the feeds. My normal routine though is have him on my lap, slowly raise his head so he is sitting up really straight. and have his chin rest against my hand between the thumb and first finger and gently pat his back or sweep his back from bottom to top. Then I'll lie him gently straight back down and then slowly lift his back up against straight and repeat. If he still hasn't burped, then I'll put him over my shoulder and gently pat his back. I think it's really important to burp your child otherwise if they have gas trapped, they will find it really hard to settle and fall asleep which means a lack of sleep for the parents! |

I actually discovered after going through weeks of colic with ur bubba that if I held her up to my shoulder (usual way) but pat her bum instead of back she would burp... I thought this was very odd but once I discovered it, it worked everytime. If I was having a really hard night with her I would put her in a quite warm bath with the johnsons lavender stuff and let her get all relaxed and then dress her and burp her again and she seemed to burp easier. Hang in there matie its a bloody hard slog those first few weeks.
