I thought that it wasn't because yeast is made via barley (I think) but I bought a packet of corn chips (Hole-Sum brand ) and it says on the front that it is gluten free but the ingredients say they contain yeast extract.
I thought Australian labelling laws were very strict about this? So do you think it would be safe for a coeliac person? |

My DD has coeliacs and she ingests yeast. (I checked it was OK with The Coeliac Society, NSW when she was diagnosed some 4 years ago.)

I rang the coeliac society today and they said it depends where the yeast comes from - if it comes from barley malt (most common source, like in beer) it's not GF but if it comes from other sources it's fine. Trouble is the packet doesn't give the source. I've emailed them to ask.

My husband has Coeliac Disease the the dietician he goes to said Yeast Extract is OK. That even if it comes from Barley it is so small that it comes in under the limits that is considered detectable gluten. However that is only the case when it is added as a flavour enhancer. If you want to spread it on your toast Vegemite is out and you can only have the non barley/wheat versions. My husband uses the d*ck Smith Version of Vegemite - he says it is not as good but at least it doesn't give him stomach issues. If I see Yeast extract in ingredient lists I also check the statement regarding allergens - usually it says gluten free. Australian law is pretty strict on the allergen statement. I have read ingredients that I thought were not a problem and it then had contains gluten.

QUOTE I thought Australian labelling laws were very strict about this? So do you think it would be safe for a coeliac person? My understanding is that if it has on the product label on the front that it's gluten free that it doesn't really matter what's in the ingredient list. This is due to the strict labelling laws in Australia. I would be a bit wary if it came from another country though. This is from info from the Coeliac Society. It's the sort of thing where there are foods made from wheat that are actually gluten free ie glucose syrup. |
