Ugh my husband is the same. I don't really buy rubbishy snacks either so he stops at the shops on his way home and buys them himself - usually chips but sometimes those mini chocolate bars or chocolate biscuits. Then he gets home from work, I tell him dinner is almost on the table yet he still feels the need to rip open his snack food and dive in rolleyes.gif I'm all for snacking while watching a movie/sport game whatever but 5pm snacking seems a little needless to me.

I really dont like him eating that stuff in front of the kids right before dinner. It just gives them SUCH a bad example.

Agree 100%

is a worry but he must be hungry. Unsure why hunger is an issue for you.

Its not hunger thats the issue. Its self control and thinking ahead. Its the "cant wait 1/2 hour for a proper meal so have to down a pack of biscuits" factor that I have an issue with.

Like PP I'm a grazer, so I'd go mad without snacks. Not that I'd agree that a packet of mint slice is a suitable "snack". But then again, he's a grown man...

We have the "snack shelf" in the pantry... crackers, sultanas, little plain biscuits for DS, that is where the chips go when we have them.

I know the stuff he's talking about, unatheowl. The yummy things you eat before a meal just because you feel like something, well, yummy - not to be confused with afternoon tea/pre-dinner cheese & dips.

We used to often have things like that but since I've been on a health kick, they've gone. We are all mourning their loss in this house.

... oh, and in addition to "snacks" (meaning chips & biscuits) DH also frequently requests "drinks with flavour" as in "I'm thirsty" "Then have a drink of water" "Nah I feel like a drink with flavour". Drinks with flavour is softdrink of course. Something else that we don't have in our house that he can help himself to as much as he likes when he goes to his Mum's place!

Same as pp, growing up it was home from school, options was a piece of fruit, a slice of cheese on a salada, or nothing.. Dinner was usually 5;30/6pm, so not alot of options..

Dh grew up on a smaLL dairy farm, so dinner time for him wasnt until 9-10pm... When I first started dating him, would drive straight to his house after work (finishe at 5;30pm, drive 3 hours) all was on offer was crap nibble snack food- chips, cheese, olives stuff like that.. By time dinner was served i was so full, but felt crappy as id had nothing substantial to eat..

I couldnt handle it... we now eat dinner between 5;30-7pm ( depends what weve been doing for the day) but if it is later, then yes yoghurts, fruit and bickies are consumed..

DP is our snacker, and then she complains about the kids demanding the snack she buys.

As for "just waiting 'til dinner", If I don't eat I end up really sh*tty, so need to have some sort of snack if dinner is going to be a little while away. So I can understand why some people would want snacks around - but a pack of choc biccies would be wrong - one or two maybe if they were easiest to hand.

As a teenager I could have happily scoffed a full loaf of bread after school and then eaten a full dinner. And I was still underweight (17.5 BMI) .....

What does your DH do for work? My DH if onsite will eat really early lunch then won't anything as a arvo snack (for me this is around 4ish) so when he gets home he is starving and has been doing manual work (if onsite) and will easily polish off some pack of chips, crackers, nuts, shapes, or a few peanut sandwhichs and still have plenty of room for dinner 1/2 an hour later.

A lot of people are saying there's nothing wrong with a packet of chips in the afternoon - that's 1000kJ + for an empty snack with no nutritional value. I have big issues with that.
