yeah lanibear, I've heard of encapsulating it, but that sounds such a pain in the butt.

Are you having a doula attend your labour/birth?

Some doulas will do this for you as part of their service.

you want to eat your own body tissue?

this is vaguely distressing

It's called Placentophagy. I would suggest if you find the idea distressing, best not to google it and especially don't look at youtube clips biggrin.gif

Father Dougal for the Papacy!
The people I know who have eaten say it is like particularly delicious liver. One woman I know who had serious PND with her first 3 babies had none with the baby where she dried and encapsulated the placenta. I think she used a similar method to the one a PP linked to.

Mine all went to nourish roses.

Thanks chickenortheegg will check out that site. I've asked my midwives but no go for them either.

Hi Amber, no I don't have an IM or doula unfortunately (DP just wants us at the birth). (BTW, I love seeing your sig, it's gorgeous, your Harper is beautiful and so is her name original.gif )

The hormones and whatever else the placenta contains. It's a vegan type of meat after all and there is some reasonable evidence that eating placenta can stem post-partum haemorrhage and that the hormones in the placenta can help with PND.

Precisely why I am doing it. I have a history of depression, so figure it can't hurt to do as much as possible to lower my chances of developing PND. I bet your roses look great and are very happy biggrin.gif

My midwife does this for the women who request it. Like you have suggested she cuts it up into bite sized pieces anf freezes them. Her women then take one per day and just swallow it like a tablet. She said it makes a huge difference to them post natally (increased energy & great moods) and they are usually sad when it's all gone. I have a friend planning to do it after her 2nd home birth later this year. Great for PND apparently. We did consider it but decided a lotus birth was more important for our situation original.gif

how to make your own Placenta PIlls

I'd rather it in pill form than straight chunkyness.
