Ladies, did anyone see the report on breast-feeding and codeine this morning on Sunrise? I only caught the end of it and it was saying how codeine can effect the baby through breast milk.

Any one heard of this? Or is this just another scare theory that we have to look out for... like just about everything else we need to watch while we are pregnant or breast feeding.

I suffer serious migraines and asked the lactation specialist at my breastfeeding class what I should do if the hormonal changes from the birth trigger a major attack. I was told that while breastfeeding I need to avoid ibuprofen and aspirin. Basically anything you might normally use for a migraine. She also said codeine was a problem. With breast milk apparently ANY drugs you take WILL end up in the milk. You need to allow several hours for the drugs to clear your system before you breastfeed. However you DON'T need to pump and dump. She said the ONLY reason to pump and dump milk is if you're undergoing chemotherapy. Otherwise your body naturally filters the milk continually. It doesn't just create and store it.
