Someone told me long ago that you should not put a load of washing on before you go to bed & leave it in the machine until you get up in the morning because the clothes start to smell musty & bacteria starts to build up (or something like that). My life would be so much easier if I could put a load on before bed then just hang it out in the morning. I have a front loader that takes about 2 hrs per load & now that we are in winter it would be nice to get as much sun on the washing as I could. Has anyone else ever been told this & is it true? Thanks

I did it last night. Had every intention of dealing with it but then got too tired.

i will often put a load on before i go to bed and then hang it out the next morning. i only really notice a musty smell if I forget that it's there and not find it until the following afternoon, or if it has been a very warm night. My mum has always done the same.
it's really up to you OP. Give it a go tonight! It might just revolutionise your life! |

I have done that before (unintentional-fell asleep) and the next morning they did smell so I put them through the wash again just because of that. Bacteria wise, I don't know

I often put a load of washing on then dont get around to hanging it out that day, you know you get so wrapped up in the dinner, then baths and putting kids to bed etc that before you know it, its 10pm and the last thing you feel like doing it hanging out washing.
I have a top loader and I set it to drip dry, then drain in the morning. I find it seems to get smelly if its drained of water at the end of the load. |

I do it all the time and never notice a smell. They usually start to smell after a whole day I find. Especially in winter, you will be fine!

LOL sometimes I forget and leave washing in the machine for two days and it's fine! As long as it gets a decent airing on the clothesline outside in the sun.

Overnight is fine here, but any longer and we get the musty smell - worse in winter.
Does your front loader have delayed start? I have a bosch and I can set it to start anywhere up to 12 hours, so alot of the time I will put everything in before bed and set it to start and be finished about the time we get up. |

I have done the washing for 47years and always do it at night to hang up, or out, first thing in the a.m. - it's efficient use of time. If the laundry is cold - there is no problem. The only time I don't do it is when I visit my sister...... she has heated floors and the washing ends up with a musty smell by the morning because the air in the laundry is so warm.
I grew up with 12 children in the family, so my mother taught us to be clean efficient and tidy - without being "military" about it all - just a way of life (...she was a fantastic Mum Advice not to do wash at night for fear of "bacteria" is ill founded.
