I had a PPH of 1000ml with DS, no blood transfusion, had curette 3wks after birth for retained placenta & haemorraging. I was terrified I would go through it all again with DD, but I had no PPH or retained placenta.

DS I had retained placenta, but got away with just needing iron tablets (twice a day).

DD I had retained placenta again, lost 2500mls and had 7 units of blood, 1 unit platelets that night, plus another 2 units of blood 2 days later. Scariest thing I went through (as was awake during surgery and could hear the urgency of needing the blood as I was losing it quickly).

OB said if I wanted more kids I'd need a c-section. But after this birth no way am I even considering more kids. DD's birth story is on EB.

But everyone's body is different and would react differently, so just trust the advice of your OB.

It really depends on what caused the pph. I had a pph with my 3rd, 3000mls, surgery, blood transfusions but had no problems with the first two. The histology on the placenta identified placental issues causes the pph (placenta accreta) , where the placenta embeds to far into the uterus. So the risk for me if i was to have a 4th is quite high and my midwife thinks I would,d have to have a cs (will find out at my 6 week check up).

I had below average blood loss for $1, #2, #3 and #5.
I lost over a litre with #4 and have been told it was due to her gestation (16 weeks).
I didn't have a transfusion but was not medically (in terms of bloods) well for quite some time.

So they were noting PPH as a concern for #5 but it never was an issue.

I had a PPH with my first.

Then had a VB with twins, then another singleton, no PPH for either.

Then had an emergency Caesar with #5. Just goes to show how different every labour can be.

I lost around 1000ml and needed a transfusion. I cant imagine how awful the ladies who've lost so much more felt, as I know I was completely out of it and weak for a long time.

Mine was put down to a lengthy labour and prolonged second stage, my poor uterus just had enough. So not the same as you.

However, my second bub, I only lost around 500ml and this was put down to the placenta I believe - I was two weeks overdue and the placenta was a bit ragged I think - I had a managed third stage. With this amount of loss I felt fine after :-)

I lost 2000ml in my PPH from my first labour. I spoke to my dr about my worries when I was pregnant with no.2 and we put in place a plan for the syntocin drip to be placed in my hand as soon as bub was delivered. It was great, no PPH in sight and a fabulous recovery

I had pph for one of my c/s births (just over 1000mls). My next child was born 15 months later (c/s again) and although I was a little worried about pph there were no problems whatsoever, in fact it was a dream delivery. I have 8 children with just the one pph.

OP I have already replied in this thread but have since had a 3rd so thought I would come back to say my blood loss only improved each time... Also wanted to add to the thread again as this was always my biggest google question when TTC

So in summary

#1 - 4000ml blood loss, 4 transfusions
#2 - 1500ml blood loss, 2 transfusions
#3 - 1000ml blood loss, haemaglobin dropped to 80 which I know a lot of Drs transfuse at, but my ob didn't (I was happy with that).

I had an elective CS this time and had a n infusion of Syntocin afterwards to help prevent a larger PPH.

I also had a PPH of just over 1000ml. I was apparently a few mls away from a transfusion and they decided against. I prob should have had one. Iron tablets for months and a very slow recovery. I had a very bad birth and a whole lot of stitches (so many they called in a surgeon rather than the OB do it).

This time it looks like it will be an elective c-section. I see my OB to discuss this Friday. I have great support from midwives and a pregnancy counselor. Hopefully we can avoid another PPH or any complications.
