Seems very weird to me.

It is certainly going to give the conspiracy theorists a chance to party.

There are many easy-to-read summaries out there of why a burial at sea might make sense under the circumstances. This one is from the Sydney Morning Herald:

Osama bin Laden's body has been buried at sea, a US official says.

US cable television networks CNN, MSNBC and Fox said a senior US official had confirmed to them that bin Laden's body had been buried in the sea, without giving further details.

Burying bin Laden's body at sea would ensure that his final resting place does not become a shrine and a place of pilgrimage for his followers, ABC television reported earlier.

The US decided to bury him at sea because it would have been difficult finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist, the official said.

After bin Laden was killed in a raid by US forces in Pakistan early on Monday, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition.

That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said.

The official did not immediately say where the body was buried at sea.

I heard on the radio they did it this way to 1) Cultural respect that Muslims usually do not erect shrines or tombstones. So preventing a shrine for his burial location.

Inclusion- It's a birthright, not a privilege.
DH reckons they just tied a boulder to his body and dumped it overboard. Nothing dignified. eta- why spend money paying someone to dig a hole for him and for security for his burial site?

I am still undecided about what I think about his death.

wikipedia says:

His body was buried at sea because Islamic tradition calls for a body to be buried within 24 hours, but according to a senior administration official, finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult.

Tanya, with all due respect, some very reputable U.S. and international media sources are reporting the burial at sea, based on information from a senior official of the U.S. government....versus...friend of an Australian EBer who lives in D.C. and used to work in the White House and still plays poker/grabs some drinks with the crew.

It's a toss up, but I think I am going to go with the CNN report.

(But I would be happy to be proven wrong) wink.gif

Makes sense to me, don't think too many countries would be willing to have an influx of his followers descending on his place of burial!

Aren't Muslims buried facing Mecca? How is this achieved in a sea burial?
