So his burial place doesn't become a shrine for terrorists or his followers, and so it doesn't become a 'sacred' site for al Qaeda.

Eta... Burial at sea isn't necessarily incompatible with a proper Islamic burial.

I haven't heard anything, but I thought their excuse might be respect for Muslim customs necessitated a quick burial. And this way there's no pilgrimage site. Other than of course the location where he died. It seems like a useless precaution in that sense. And a bit sus overall.

One - it's goes against Islamic tradition of earth burial on the sunset of death.
Two - No-one can now identify the body

The news tonight mentioned that its because they doubted there would be a country that would be willing to accept his body / remains for burial.
