I have a balanced translocation of 22 & 12 and am about to start my first cycle of IVF without PGD and was wondering how other people with a bt have gone on their first attempt with IVF??

I have never heard of an 'balanced translocation'? What does that term mean?

Maybe ask in the PGD section as well. Some ladies there did IVF without PGD first, or had natural pregnancies/miscarraiges etc.

Hi, I am 35 and have a balanced transolcation 13:15 and we were successful with our first attempt at IVF ICSI. I didn't know I have a translocation until we started testing after the 12 week scan came back with high risk downs. downs ruled out they tested further and then found the translocation after a good month tests and waiting. Our son is now 8 months old very happy baby and is 'normal' if there is ever a normal for babies!

My story is different to yours, but I have a balanced translocation (5:11) which was discovered after I naturally conceived our first child. I then went on to have 4 miscarriages before undergoing testing where my translocation was discovered. I then had another 5 miscarriages through natural conception.

I underwent IVF to access PGD and was very fortunate to have success on the first cycle.

Are you able to conceive naturally? If you are undergoing IVF to conceive then before commencing I would seriously consider the options. IVF is expensive, PGD is bloody expensive, however if you are needing to undergo multiple cycles to get that embryo that is balanced (which may mean that your translocation is passed on to your child amongst the many other things but all the genetic material is still there) you may find that even though IVF is successful in that you conceive, you may be going on the recurrent miscarriage roller coaster.

If you haven't already, pop on over into the PGD thread in the Assisted Conception Buddy Groups, it's very active at the moment and even if you do decide to do IVF without PGD, the girls in there understand the issues and frustration of having translocations or other genetic issues into the already difficult road that is Assisted Conception.
