I was diagnosed by the GP with pink-eye/conjunctivitis yesterday. It's the viral form of conjunctivitis (no gunk just watery and pink/red) which does not respond to medical treatment. He's given me some mild eye drops but they don't seem to be doing much.
I was researching online for natural remedies as I'm currently pregnant and read that one of the treatment for conjunctivitis was to apply a few drops of breastmilk. I'm a breastfeeding mum to a 19 month old so I have a ready supply Has anyone heard of this or tried it? How successful is it? A homeopathic remedy I've read is to use milk and honey on the eye. Is this safe? This post has been edited by dogsneaker: 08/01/2011, 07:18 PM |

I used to treat DD's gunky eyes as a NB with breast milk all the time, it works like a charm.
I just squirted a bit of milk onto a cotton ball until it was well-wetted and wiped her eyes with it. If I was treating myself I would squeeze the drops of milk into my eyes like eyedrops. |

not on myself, but when I was in hospital just given birth to DS he developed an eye infection, green gunk, he was prescribed a eye drop but paediatrician told me to squirt breast milk in too, so I did, felt a tad wierd, but his eye cleard up perfect - but I was using the drops too, so cant say which it was.
Cant say it would hurt to try. |

yes I've used it many times for myself and my children.
I have resorted to antibiotic drops when I need it cleared up faster to return to daycare/work which generally clears it much faster if it is the bacterial version. |

I didnt think of squirting onto a cotton ball, I just kept trying to squirt directly into DD's eye, poor thing would end up with milk all over her face. Can I blame lack of sleep for this one? |

Most of the online literature talks about treating children especially newborns with breast milk... just not on ones self
I'll give it a go... vision in one eye is going a wee bit fuzzy. This post has been edited by dogsneaker: 08/01/2011, 07:29 PM |

My DD1 (34 yrs) has successfully cleared conjunctivitis in all her children + husband + self + niece with her own breast milk.
With her own children she just expressed her milk into their eyes, with niece she expressed into a medicine cup and it was put into niece's eye with an eye drop. Not sure how she did it with her DH or herself, but I am sure it would have been one or the other. If I had conjunctivitis I would not hesitate in asking my daughter to help out. |
