I found mine when I was about 16 weeks pregnant with DD. We met for coffee about a month later and then monthly after that. She was a great source of information and support during my first pregnancy.

I'm one of these strange women who is opting for more intervention (an epidural due to a very difficult labour and birth last time) this time around so we won't be using a doula, but if you are aiming for a drug-free natural birth, I highly recommend it. Our doula was a great support to my husband as well as me on the day.

Anywhere from 20 weeks to around 36 weeks is the norm.

Finding a doula who has a similar philosophy to you, who is passionate and well informed, is a must.

I am usually hired by women around 22-32 weeks, but some women don't know about doulas until they are further into their pregnancies. It is important to build trust and rapport, so I would suggest 36 weeks is the latest. Although emergency situations have meant that sometimes a doula is hired within hours of the birth, with great results.

Either way, good luck with your search, and I hope you find someone suited to you!

Wilma, I also wanted to suggest that many doulas will help you even if you are choosing more intervention- in fact, for more control you might find a doula will be helpful. I have assisted women who have had epidurals and women who have had cesareans and I can assure you that a doula will tailor her skills to suit your needs.

Wilma09, a good doula will work with your desires for the birth, whether you plan to use drugs or not. Doulas aren't just for drug-free natural births, just like women haven't 'failed' if they don't achieve one. A Doula is a great form of support at all types of birth, caesars included.
