My DS2 starts prep on Jan 24th, his older brother started prep last year (2010) so I know what I am in for but due to the fact he won't be 5 when he starts (5 in March) and his brother was 5.5 when he started and also DS2 is smaller than DS1 and is my baby

A friend told me last year how her husband kept making big jokes about how silly mummy would probably cry on the first day of school as her baby was growing up and she was so proud and we adopted this approach and it worked a treat, DS1 thought it was hilarious and every day they would have a little joke about whis mummy would have a cry. DS1 was totally fine and expected me to cry on the first day, I held it together until I left the classroom. It didn't help when my girlfriend walked in sobbing !!

We are all pretty sorted....just need shoes.

Another one starting Kindy this year. First day is the 3rd or 4th of Feb (am on holidays and apparently the letter is at home).. Best Start assessment on the 1st.

I am in the middle of researching stickers/labels/etc at the moment. THere are so many and I don't know which ones to get. I got some for her for day care 3 years ago, but I was not overly impressed as they kept coming off.. so I need to find different ones.

We have the uniforms all organised (Well, almost!). I need to get her some black tracksuit pants - was hoping to get them second hand, but haven't got them yet, so might just have to get some plain tracksuit pants to do for sport. She's got sneakers all sorted - but now we have to find some shoes. I want to get her some velcro mary-janes, so will keep an eye out for when Rivers do their sale as they are fantastic shoes.

I am going to also be one of those blubbering messes when it comes time for her to go to class... Cried in each of the parent orientation meetings so far!

Hi everyone DD starts kindergarten on 1st February.
We only need to buy a lunchbox and drinkbottle and iron on labels and stickers.
I have 5 sets of summer uniform, 2 hats, shoes a jumper and 3 pairs of pants so I need to buy some more jumpers and pants but she has enough to start school and i will only have to wash once a week.

We picked up our phonics pack at our orientation, I do need to get her to use little letters rather then capitals but she is more then ready.

We went shopping today. Bags, lunch boxes, drink bottle and socks bought.

Now I just have to make podiatrist appointments for both my eldest DSs before we can buy shoes. I've noticed recently DS#1 has quite pronated ankles and I want to see what needs to be done to fix that. Figure I may as well get DS#2 checked while we're at it so we don't end up 2 years down the track and having to fix problems, rather than being able to prevent them. If either of them need orthotics which will require shoes that fit them, or even a specific type of shoe with certain inners, I'd like to know before buying the wrong ones.

adnama - DS#2 writes in capitals as well. I don't know why he started as he didn't previously.

My beautiful big boys are starting school this year as well.

I am so jealous of all your starting dates though: ours isn't until the 7th Feb!!!! The rest of the schools go back on the 4th but the Preps are using that for testing. They then only go for afternoons the first week as they are testing in the mornings and full days start on the 14th. It still feels so long away and they are driving me slightly nutty as Kinder finished 3 weeks ago.

I went and spent a fortune at the uniform shop for their top half. I just bought some basic Target shorts for the bottom half and actually got some great ones from Pumpkin Patch of all places. I need to look into some new sneakers for them. Otherwise I think it is just lunch boxes as we will be using the same bag that they had for Kinder.

Thanks for the reminder on labels though, really must get onto that!

It would go up to addition/subtraction etc wouldn't it? Do you know if they just stop when a child gets something wrong? DS would not have much chance of counting to 100 without making a single mistake (fully understands the number order & place value but rushes through counting & can miss the odd number), but ask him what 63+29 or similar is & he has no problem doing it in his head.

DD said they didn't use any numbers higher than 20 but she's not sure now. I remember they asked her 12+7. She described it as using lots of counters for demonstrating understanding of adding, subtracting, grouping and sharing so it sounds quite concrete.

It will be worth you making an appointment as early as possible once classes begin to discuss where they'll go with his maths.

Hello ladies

DS1 starts Prep on the 4th Feb. He is super excited (and so am i )

I just finished buying his lunchbox, drink bottle, shorts, pants, socks and shoes today.

Just waiting to pick up the rest of his uniform and bag, hat etc when they arrive at the school.

The first 4 weeks he will only be attending school on monday, tuesday, thursday and friday, then after the 4 weeks he is there full time!

Can't believe my little man is so grown up

Less than 4wks to go now (for DD)!!
My DS1 started back at CC today, and both boys go tomorrow so it will just be DD and I... waiting patiently... lol
We've stocked up on socks & hairbands in the sales, so now have nothing to do 'school-wise'...

Out of interest, there has been no mention of the Best Start Assessment at DD's school.
Is it a given, or do they not do it in Catholic schools?!? Would we have heard about it by now?!

Hello everyone!

My DS2 (Noah) will begin school this year. The kindy teacher resigned at the end of last year, which is a shame as she was fantastic. Noah has some delays and I had confidence in her ability in regards to this. I will find out who the new teacher is on the first day of school when DS1 goes back. (Kindy goes back the next day).

I am a little anxious about how Noah will settle in. He knows a few people that will be in his class, and is familiar with the school as his big brother goes into year 3 this year

I never had to worry with DS1, he is a very social child, great at making friends, and also was already reading etc when he started school so academically fine even though he started before his 5th birthday.

But with DS2, his delays really concern me and he seems to have got worse over the holidays as he has not been attending early intervention. I hope that he improves as he moves through Term 1.

His delays are with receptive & expressive language, and also some social/emotional delays.


Anyway I am hoping he will surprise me and take to school like a duck to water! And that he will trust his new teacher~
