Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate your help and advice. I am having a very hard time deciding upon a girls name. I like names starting with A, E, or I. Here are my thoughts so far, let me know what you think.

Elizabeth (would she always get Lizzie as a nickname or could we use Eli/Ellie?)

Eloise (MIL thinks too hard to spell??)

Amelia (not sure what her nick name would be - Millie??) or Emilia (then she would get Emmie??)

Elise (great friend just had a DD called Alyssa, is it too similar?).

Isabel (is it too popular now with Isabella being in the top 10 for so long?).

any thoughts appreciated

I love all of your names but thought I would comment with respect to Elizabeth (since I have one!). I hate all of the nicknames derived from Elizabeth but was still not deterred from using this beautiful name. Its quite simple to correct anyone who tries to shorten the name and I feel it is actually quite rude for people to do it without permission (same if someone called my Mil when I had introduced myself as Milly).

Anyhoo, my Elizabeth is always going to be Elizabeth, and the only person who can decide otherwise is Elizabeth herself. If she decided to call herseld lizzy when she gets older (blergh) then I will have to grin and bare it I suppose ROFL.

Out of you other picks I would probaly pick Isobel next, Then Amelia, and finally Elise/Eloise.

I like Amelie as well, which is basically said "Emily" (although Emily is a name I dont really like so go figure! LOL). However both are in the same vein as your other names.

Josie, all of your names are lovely. I have two friends called Elizabeth, one is nicknamed Libby and the other is nicknamed Beth. I think that Milly is right, you have some power over what she is called until at least she goes to school.

Names we had on our list, apart from some you have already mentioned, were Alice, Anne, Alexandra, Amelia, and Eleanor.

Eleanor is easier to use Ellie with than Elizabeth but again it is up to you. I don't think Eloise is hard to spell but then we are going with Siobhan! I knew an Amelia who went by Amy. Elise and Alyssa are very similar, it might be too close if you see each other a lot. We were worried about popular names too, Isabel is extremely popular but it is so beautiful.

We liked Elizabeth for the same reasons (lots of choices) but decided on Eliza - we love it and it suits her to a tee.

Just thought I'd add the "is a bell necessary on a bike" comment people make when you name your child Isabel. Very pretty name but the comment really gets to me.

Hi Josie

It is a difficult decision isn't it! I am a big fan of simple old fashioned names that are easy to spell. Even with a simple name such as mine(Lynn) I have always had to correct people on the spelling (two N's not one, no E etc etc).

(not to say I don't like unusual or unique names or spellings - just wouldn't choose one myself - no offence meant to others that choose them -phew - hope I haven't offended anyone)

How about Alice (biased though , Abigail, Abby, or Elsie.

All the names you listed are sweet - and I agree with Milly - it just takes a bit of effort to keep people from shortening a name if you don't want then to. I think a few well placed "her name is ......." would nip it in the bud.

My girlfriend did this once with her son James when someone called him Jamie - she replied with a smile "his name is James" and it never happened again!

I LOVE Amelia and it is on the top of our list if we have a girl, however I do not like it shortened in any way, just love it as is. The same goes with Elizabeth. I am actually quite against shortening names. I think people should be called by their full names (unless of course the person states otherwise).

They are all beautiful names however my picks are Amelia then Elizabeth.

Your list of names is lovely. I worked with a girl called Amalia and thought that was a lovely alternative to Amelia. It wasn't ever shortened by anyone.

I don't think that Eloise is difficult to spell and Isabel is lovely but how about spelling it Isobel instead which I think is the French way? I could be corrected on that though

I like Eloise the best! I find that some people spell it incorrectly but think it will be easy for my Eloise to spell when she gets older. No one can spell our surname anyway so it's not a big drama. And people always comment on what a nice name it is.

being able to shorten your name isn't such a bad thing guys!
As a formal Elizabeth and an informal Libby I like having the option-but detest being called Lizzie esp as in Lizzard breath!? i have both friends who are called Liz and Beth.
I like Eloise as a second name-think it goes well with Emogen but i think i'm the only one who likes it spelled this way

Just adding-Melody is sometimes Mel-and is even called Mildred by her uncle! Ahh! So u can't always tell what nick name is going to be layed apon your child.

Hi,

I think all the names you have listed are lovely although from experience kids do seem to end up with shortened names (I'm a Belinda that usually gets shortened). We really liked Emogen but decided that the spelling would be a lifelong explanation so ended up with Imogen (I have a difficult surname to spell) and thought it was less likely to get shortened than some other names we liked.
