DH & I were discussing this tonight. Basically we thought that everything JG seems to be addressing "as a matter of urgency" is completely banal.

Asylum seekers - are there really people out there who think we are in danger of being over-run by 3000 boat arrivals every year?

Climate change - big issue, but not something that anything they do will have any major effect on. Good if you're into symbolism, but not much good if you really want the problem fixed.

Tax system - they keep buggerising around with it, but every so-called attempt at "simplification" ends with more complexity. Now they think a great big tax on mining can fix everything? (and I agree with the concept of a mining tax, but not for the reasons cited)

If I was completely cynical, I'd think that were just using smoke and mirrors to distract us from the fact that neither side of politics has a clue.

What about the housing crisis? Both affordability and actual dwelling numbers? What about aged care? Health care? Population ageing? What about action on emission reductions? What about a myriad of other issues that are actually important?

Do you agree? What are your big issues - what will get your vote?

And it's exactly because of people like you that nothing will happen.

Yeah, I was disappointed by the Henry tax review. I was hoping for so much more . What a missed opportunity.

Some off the top of my head:

Housing supply: I would like to see more public housing. Negative gearing abolished for investment in existing dwellings but retained for investment in only newly constructed dwellings - this would promote consruction of new dwellings adding to the housing stock - not just merely inflating the prices of existing stock. It would also stimulate the construction industry and employment.

Environment: Murray Darling Basin. Water. Salinity. These are critical for sustainability of our agriculture industry as well.

Aboriginal issues: Enough is enough - how can we tolerate the inequities any longer?

I agree with this 100%!! What happened a couple of weeks ago, and what happened Nov last year proves that IMO.

In all honesty - it doesn't matter who we vote for anymore. They're all full of sh*t.

I'll be looking for international development, mental health, aged and disability care, public housing and rural development policies, amongst other things...and anyone who doesn't use the word illegal in the same breath as asylym seekers.
