*facepalm* yay for hospitals!
Got a frantic phone call from my Gastro last week saying I had an Hb level of 78, had dropped from 115 6 weeks earlier. Wanted an immediate transfusion and colonoscopy to see how severe the ulcerations were - hold the phone, I'm completely asymptomatic! No abdo pain, no runs, no bleeding, no tiredness, no weight loss or loss of appetite - any of those things and I would have been straight on the phone, not trying to ignore it for 6 weeks! Reluctantly booked the transfusion thinking he'd want 2 units, only to find out he wanted 4...4! I'm not sick at all, not even tired! No way known do I need 4 units when someone much sicker could use it! Argued the fact a bit - also there was no way in hell I was staying in hospital overnight when I spent 5 weeks there late last year! - and got it down to 3 units as a day procedure, refused the colonoscopy completely.
So I rock up to hospy at 10.30 this morning ready for my 3 units, get all comfy in my room...and wait...and wait...and wait some more. Finally had a jelco put in at 1pm, Dr rewrote orders at 1.15pm (hospy 'misplaced' the ones he wrote out last week to avoid the wait!). Thought the ball was rolling and I'd be out at about 9pm. Boy was I wrong! Blood didn't go up until 4 pm, jelco blew out well and truly at end of second unit, third unit finally went up half an hour after that...so I'm now finishing at 1.30am! They're not at all happy about discharging me at that time but stiff bikkies - it was meant to be a day procedure, I hadn't organised to have Friday off of work - and I work as a nanny, so not like i can ring and say I can't work with only a few hour's notice! Not overly impressed, will be going to a different hospy next time methinks!
On the upside, Remicade is working well, fingers crossed it keeps doing so!
