Hi all,

Just watching the news and this topic was brought up on TODAY.

Just after being at work the other day and it came up over lunch that France had banned it in their country. Also a lady I work with wears the head piece but doesn't cover her whole face as she doesn't like it.

I am a bit naieve about the religion/culture and was wondering why they actually wear it and if they acually like wearing it?

Muslim womans feedback welcome too!

Just curious... original.gif

I have many female students from Saudi Arabia, some cover their whole face, some do not. It is their choice initially but this can be over ruled by their father or husband.

It's true that they believe that men would become out of control sex demons if women (Muslim Saudi women) were to be uncovered. They feel they are preserving their modesty and protecting themselves from lust.

They don't think non Muslims live in the same state of inpropriety.
However they do point out the statistics on rape and assault in Western countries compared to the (almost non-existent) rate in the Saudi states.
This to them is clear proof. And I suppose it's self fulfilling.

The women all take off their veils when they are only in the company of women, Western or not.

And they rip off those burkas and hijabs at home with their families.

If people seriously want to dress that way, then they should have stayed in countries where it is the norm. I

Oh man that's just one step away from a bogan sticker on the back of a ute.

They aren't generally planning to stay, they are here for education and professional qualifications.

You know, you get used to it, you'd think that teaching English to a pair of kohl rimmed eyes and no more would be hard, but it's not, they usually have clear voices and I can recognise them all from their eyes and gestures.

Uhhhhh wacko.gif the state of reported rapes and assaults. In some middle east cultures we know that to be the victim of a rape is a death sentence sad.gif

I know muslim women who feel that the burqa or hijab are a tool of liberation - that they are not judged or viewed only for their sexuality or their looks. It is liberating and a sense of freedom. Who are we to argue?

QUOTE
Yes but is it really choice or religious indocrtrination.
If it is choice then why don't some Catholic women (for example as another religion) choose to cover their face up by some other means. Or why don't men ever choose to cover their face up.

It isn't really choice. It is choice in the same way that some women decide to undergo female genital mutilation for their religion or culture. I am not equating the two before anyone goes off at me. I am saying that sometimes choice is a pressured choice by family and the way they have been brought up since birth.

In some cases it might be supressive and indoctrination, but it is not always the case. The point is, who are we to dictate whether or not someone wears a piece of clothing; who are we to judge the reasons or merit for them wearing it?

Red Squirrel; & Lisa Tribal aborigine's (before the English invasion) wore very different dress than the english; should we also be forced to wear their tribal garb because "it's their country and their way"

The Hypocrisy in this thread is disturbing.
