Hi girls,

I had a bad bout of Thrush about 2 weeks ago, my OB diagnosed and sent me off to get some cannesten to treat it.
I did the 6 day treatment, and it cleared it all up within the first three days (I still did the full treatment), but now it seems to be coming back.
I am noticing what I think are very early signs that it is returning.
I really don't want to have to keep buying cannesten all the time, but I had heard of vinegar to treat it... how?

Also is it true that drinking yakult everyday helps keep it away?

Thanks!

Hi,

Have not heard of vinegar to treat thrush and I would probably avoid using it anyway as it may upset the natural ph of the vaginal area. Having worked in pharmacy for 8 years before I had my son it was a very common topic!

My suggestion is make sure you complete the full treatment(which I see you have) avoid using/washing with soaps in that area as again this upsets the natural ph and can sometimes make the itchiness etc worse. Use soap free products (if you dont want to wash with just warm water) if you are prone to getting thrush. In regards to the yakult, you can try it as the acidophillus in there is great for rebalancing the good bacteria levels in the digestive tract. However the amount of acidophillus or good bacteria in products like yoghurt/yakult is very small and you would probably have to eat/drink alot of it. There is a product called Inner Health available at pharmacies and health food stores and it has the highest amount of the bacteria in one little capsule or it comes in powder also. It is safe for pregnant women too and just about everyone can take it but please check with the pharmacist or doctor first if you are pregnant though.

I think it can be common to get thrush in pregnancy unfortunatley but maybe trying the inner health will help keep it at bay for you!

Good luck wink.gif

Really gross, but my mother swears by yoghurt. As in rubbing yoghurt on the affected area (sorry - TMI).

I have never had thrush, so cannot offer anything else.

Good luck - I can imagine it must be driving you nuts!

I am thinking, therefore I exist.
ouch, I wouldn't use vinegar. It may sting a hell of alot. I've heard natural yogurt is good cause of the probiotics. Also take a inner health plus day.

Good luck

Just a question, Hayls ... have you have your blood sugar levels tested since the thrush became a problem?

Sometimes reccurrent thrush is a sign of diabetes and although the GD test is done at a standard time, I know that I developed diabetes at 30 weeks in my second pregnancy and it was only caught then because I was having constant testing due to having had GD in my first.

Just a thought ...

Proud BFAR mum 12 months!
I got thrush from lots of antibiotics and it cleared up with one treatment but then I got it on my tongue (apparently unrelated) so I started eating probiotic yoghurt every morning and it went away. I stopped eating it for a few days and my tongue got yukky again so I have started with the yoghurt again and I am too scared to stop eating it! I think it's the actual contact of the yoghurt that's keeping it at bay rather than it going through your system so I think PPs are right, you gotta put it on. I have never heard of vinegar to treat it though.

I had thrush last week, and was told by my doctor to get a Canesten Pessary. You can just get them over-the-counter.
You just put it up inside your vagina as far as you can with your fingers only (not the applicator) and do it before you go to bed. It does it's work overnight, then the next day it gradually falls out and works on the way out as well.

Since using it, I have not had any recurrences, however it hasn't been that long!

Good luck, it can be so frustrating!!

P.S - "They say" you get thrush if you're having a girl...! Not sure how true it is of course!

Actually white vinegar was all that worked for me with both my pregnancies and it was my Dr who suggested I try it.

White vinegar, no soap to wash the area, cotton underwear and no underwear where ever possible.

I tried the chemist medications, but the thrush always came back. The thing that helped was daily salt baths.

Very, very salty. Every day.

I'm a great big fan of the yoghurt treatment, it always works. Insert a tampon dipped in yoghurt, and if it's a bad case of thrush, you can also add some crushed garlic to the mixture - may burn a bit at first, but it's better than the itch. It's kinda like shoving tsatsiki up your privates. tongue.gif

Of course, if you're pregnant, check with your OB first to make sure this method is safe in pregnancy.
